Regla 6: no implicarse. Regla 7: no traicionar ...

Franco

Franco

Autor: Geoffrey Jensen

Número de Páginas: 135

Before becoming one of the longest-ruling dictators of the twentieth century, Francisco Franco commanded troops in the kinds of wars that have since become all too familiar. He not only waged vicious counterinsurgency campaigns against Muslim warlords and defiant tribes in Morocco, but he also led a multinational force to victory in Europe’s “dress rehearsal†for World War II—the Spanish Civil War. Born into a military family in 1892, Francisco Franco first made a name for himself leading attacks against rebellious Moroccan warlords and tribesmen and by 1926 was promoted to brigadier general. His role in the ruthless suppression of the 1934 revolution by coal miners in Asturias sealed his reputation for brutality, although Franco saw it as simply carrying out an order in the most efficient manner possible. In 1936, as head of Spain's formidable Army of Africa, Franco joined a military revolt against the Popular Front government of the republic. He quickly secured the support of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, touching off more than two years of bloody civil war. Within months of the wars outbreak he became generalissimo and head of state of the rebel camp,...

El Filibusterismo

El Filibusterismo

Autor: José Rizal , Harold Augenbraum

Número de Páginas: 339

The Stunning continuation of José Rizal's great revolutionary epic of the Philippines - in a new translation Picking up the story of Noli Me Tangere thirteen years later, El Filibusterismo presents a gripping tale of obsession and revenge. Gone are the Noli's themes of innocent love, its hero, Ibarra, a man of great integrity and vision, replaced by the mysterious jeweller Simoun and a venal-and reprehensible-cast of characters. The result of Rizal's growth as a writer and influenced by his exposure to international events, El Filibusterismo is a riveting and suspenseful account of Filipino resistance to colonial rule that still resonates today. 'Augenbraum has done a masterful job translating El Filibusterismo and provides another elegant, well-researched and thoughtful introduction. Though the Noli remains the better known of the two, this powerful sequel shows us a more complicated, tough-minded Rizal and deserves a wider readership.' - Jessica Hagedorn Translated with an Introduction and Notes by HAROLD AUGENBRAUN

Taraval, rector of the mission of Santa Rosa, describes the Indian hostilities encountered by the Jesuit missionaries who sought to settle and Christianize the area. His journal begins in July 1734 with rumors of impending revolt among the Pericúes and Huchitíes. By Oct. 6, 1734, he and some loyal Callajue Indian followers had fled to the island of Espíritu Santo, after having received word of the massacre of two other Jesuit priests, Lorenzo Carranco and Nicolás Tamaral at the Santiago and San Joséph missions, respectively. With Captain Estevan Rodríguez Lorenzo, an experienced Indian fighter, Father Taraval decides to return to La Paz and establish military headquarters there from which to deal with the rebels. Unfortunately, when other Indian hostilities jeopardize the San Ignacio mission in the north, La Paz is abandoned in Jan. 1735. The journal documents ongoing skirmishes in Mission Dolores area during 1735, and the arrival of soldiers and Yaqui Indians under the command of Manuel Huidobro in December. Taraval...

Soy Tu Hermano, Felipe

Autor: Emilio Alberto Sarabia

Número de Páginas: 262

Ramon Medellin was fortunate to be able to leave the politics of Porfirio Diaz's regime in the capital for a fertile valley in the state of Guanajuato, where he learned to be a rancher and support his family. But he couldn't avoid the impending violence forever, and soon the Revolution arrives at his doorstep, with federales fighting rebels in his peaceful valley. Soon, his sons are scattered to the winds, seeking their fortunes during a time when bandits, whether government troops or rebels, roamed the land. Each young man struggles with the opportunities and dangers thrown in his path, which ultimately leads north to the United States: Socorro is detained in a slave labor camp and nearly loses his life, Jose ends up in Europe as the First World War breaks out and Felipe meets the love of his life in San Antonio while searching for his missing brothers. Ultimately, the family is reunited, building lives for themselves and their families in Houston, Texas, and becoming entrepreneurs and pillars of the Mexican-American community. Set in war-torn Mexico and segregated Texas in the early twentieth century, Sarabia's debut novel depicts the experiences of many Mexican Americans whose...

The Algarrobos Quartet

The Algarrobos Quartet

Autor: Gerardo Mario Goloboff

Número de Páginas: 278

The Algarrobos Quartetis a series of four short, enigmatic novels set on the northern pampas of Argentina. In the town of Algarrobos, the rules of the game are mysterious, and terrible events occur without warning. Unexpected deaths remain unexplained. Soldiers attack innocent workers. Pampered doves die brutally as well, and a Biblical flood threatens to wash everything away. Most people in Algarrobos don't know why these things happen, and they don't want to know. Puzzles and multiple meanings abound in Goloboff's writing. A central character is known as El Negro though he isn't black. In three of these Argentine Jewish novels only a few characters identify themselves as Jews. There are assimilated Jews, an old, broken-down Jewish cemetery, and some stories of the Jewish past. The fourth novel deals with Italian-Argentine anarchists. These novels are a transmutation of reality, a veil, a facade. Goloboff's prose takes on multiple meanings, and the translation masterfully captures his use of language to evoke enigmas that challenge us to understand both the stories and how chaos and the unexpected engulf us all.

Mariana Pineda

Mariana Pineda

Autor: Federico García Lorca

Número de Páginas: 175

Mariana Pineda (1925) was Lorca's first success in the theatre. Based on a popular Andalusian ballad, it tells the story of Mariana Pineda who was garrotted in 1831 under the reactionary regime of Ferdinand VII for embroidering a Liberal flag and refusing to betray her lover. Written during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the political message would not have escaped Lorca's audience. But the play is primarily the work of a poet and its appeal lies in the delicate tension that results from a deft blend of lyricism and drama which culminates in an astonishing level of spirituality in the final scenes when Mariana awaits her execution in a prison-convent. The characteristic themes of Lorca's tragedies - love, frustration, fate, freedom, death and womanhood - flourish within the play's appropriate and exquisite romantic mood. Spanish text with facing-page translation, introduction and commentary.

Blockaders, Refugees & Contrabands

Blockaders, Refugees & Contrabands

Autor: George E. Buker

Número de Páginas: 235

Blockaders, Refugees, and Contrabands chronicles the role of the East Gulf Blockading Squadron in creating civil strife and warfare along the west coast of Florida during the Civil War. This history illuminates the Squadron's impact on Florida - the Confederate state most susceptible to actions by the U.S. Navy - and the far-reaching effects of its activities on the outcome of the War. Initially the East Gulf Blockading Squadron gave no indication that, with its allies - Florida's refugees and contrabands (escaped slaves) - it would create a civil war within Florida. When the Squadron raided the mainland it found sympathizers ashore who helped the sailors cut out blockade-runners, harass the enemy, and destroy coastal salt works. As the number of refugees and contrabands increased they became a source of manpower for the Squadron. After Confederate conscripts and army deserters fled to the impenetrable swamps of Florida's Gulf Coast, they turned to the Squadron for succor and aid. In time the blockaders, refugees, and contrabands joined forces to participate in fluid partisan combat actions. When Federal control of the Mississippi River cut the South's supply of western beef, the...

Beetle Trilogy Y Otras Obras

Beetle Trilogy Y Otras Obras

Autor: Damián Ortega , Eungie Joo , Hari Kunzru , Alma Ruiz

Número de Páginas: 200

This first North American monograph on Mexican artist Damian Ortega documents 10 years of work focused on conceptual practice, social organization, and humor, including the installations and performances that make up his acclaimed Beetle Trilogy, several works never before exhibited and a great deal of unpublished material. Most of what's here hasn't been seen before. The first episode of the trilogy, "The Cosmic Thing," a disassembled Volkswagen suspended in the air, was featured in Gabriel Orozco's Il Quotidiano Alterato at the 2003 Venice Biennale, and was one of the most widely reproduced images of that year's exhibition. "Moby Dick," a heroic action involving the artist's Beetle, a live band, ropes and pulleys, followed, and then "Beetle '83 Escarabajo," a ritual return to the vehicle's place of birth, closed the cycle. The Beetle Trilogy and Other Works includes a new comic, 150 color images and an original essay by Hari Kunzru, author of The Impressionist and one of Granata's 20 "Best Young British Novelists" in 2003.

Nota

Nota

Autor: Martin Corless-Smith

Número de Páginas: 12

Nota is part travelogue and part philosophical examination. Corless-Smith here makes a compendium: layers of reference, of history, of text over text over text. Invented and real figures watch over a Self who admits to a history beyond the moment of simple consumption. The setting is an England in its Golden Age, a homesick construction to be consumed, with pleasure, in the discomfiting knowledge of its artificiality.

This enchanting novel transcends reality and flirts with fantasy as it tells two converging stories: one at the popular Royal Magic Circus and the other at El Cisne restaurant in Bogota. The characters' intricate stories are woven together by illusion, dreams, and love.
