Les animaux sont-ils de « simples vivants », comme le ressasse une tradition de pensée encore dominante ? L'opposition entre vie et existence les range, avec les plantes, dans un ensemble homogène - le grand tout de la Nature - pour mieux réserver à l'homme la tragédie de l'existence. N'y a-t-il donc que lui pour vivre sa vie ? pour naître et mourir, ressentir l'angoisse ou la joie ? Le dualisme entre vie animale et existence humaine ne résiste pourtant pas à un examen sérieux. Au terme d'un parcours critique à travers les philosophies qui ont pensé l'animal, Florence Burgat se demande à quelles conditions une vie peut être qualifiée d'existence. Chaque fois, nous dit-elle, qu'un être vivant est non seulement un centre à partir duquel s'organisent ses relations à l'entourage, mais aussi le sujet de ses propres expériences. This work by the Spanish humanist and philosopher, Juan Luis Vives, is the first tract of its kind in the Western world to treat the problem of urban poverty and propose concrete suggestions for a policy of social legislation. The treatise, published in 1526, is dedicated to the civil authorities of Bruges and deals specifically with the problems of that city, but with potential universal application. Vives calls upon the wealthy to share their blessings with those less fortunate, emphasizing that possessions are not given to us for our own use only but to share them with our neighbour.
