Conscience on Stage

Conscience on Stage

Autor: Hilaire Kallendorf

Número de Páginas: 310

It is no accident that some variation of the question 'What should I do?' appears in over three-quarters of the comedic plays of the Spanish Golden Age. Casuistical dialogue was a concern, even an obsession, of Spanish playwrights during the seventeenth century, many of whom were educated by Jesuit casuists. Conscience on Stage is a study of casuistry or case morality as the foundation for a poetics of seventeenth-century Spanish >em>comedias. Hilaire Kallendorf examines the Jesuit upbringing and casuistical education of major playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age, many of whom were also priests, and introduces the vocabulary of casuistry, as expressed in both confessors' manuals and in stage plays. Engaging issues of class, gender, and age to explore scenes of advice-giving and receiving, she demonstrates how the culture-specific construct of 'conscience' in early modern Spain can be recovered by means of a Foucauldian genealogy, which enlists the skills of philology at the service of a larger vision of the history of ideas. This study outlines and reiterates the relationship of theatre to casuistry, the Jesuit contributions to Spanish literary theory and practice, and the...

Marginal Subjects

Marginal Subjects

Autor: Akiko Tsuchiya

Número de Páginas: 297

Late nineteenth-century Spanish fiction is populated by adulteresses, prostitutes, seduced women, and emasculated men - indicating an almost obsessive interest in gender deviance. In Marginal Subjects, Akiko Tsuchiya shows how the figure of the deviant woman--and her counterpart, the feminized man - revealed the ambivalence of literary writers towards new methods of social control in Restoration Spain. Focusing on works by major realist authors such as Benito Pérez Galdós, Emilia Pardo Bazán, and Leopoldo Alas (Clarín), as well as popular novelists like Eduardo López Bago, Marginal Subjects argues that these archetypes were used to channel collective anxieties about sexuality, class, race, and nation. Tsuchiya also draws on medical and anthropological texts and illustrated periodicals to locate literary works within larger cultural debates. Marginal Subjects is a riveting exploration of why realist and naturalist narratives were so invested in representing gender deviance in fin-de-siècle Spain.

The Lyrical Vision of María Luisa Bombal

The Lyrical Vision of María Luisa Bombal

Autor: Celeste Kostopulos-cooperman

Número de Páginas: 108

This volume contains an examination of what are described as the most poetic examples of Chilean prose written in the 20th century. By adopting Ralph Freedman's conceptual definition of lyrical narrative and using it as her point of departure, Professor Kostopolos-Cooperman argues that the protean and magical nature of Bombal's lyrical prose transcends the causal, temporal and spatial movement that characterizes conventional fiction. In her view, Bombal's work is rather a narrative that arises in the poetic imagination of a narrator who creates a tapestry of expanding musical and pictorial patterns frequently reflecting the inner lives of her protagonists - alienated heroines who withdraw into an illusory world of dreams, fantasies and idealized realities where the conflict between self and other is rendered through a suggestive and contemplative network of subjective associations.

Avenida Hope - VERSIÓN BILINGÜE (Español-Inglés)

Autor: John Barlow

No puedes cambiar tu pasado.

Great apes and their basic rights

Great apes and their basic rights

Autor: Pedro Pozas Terrados

Número de Páginas: 552

"The great apes and their basic rights" is a call to put in debate the importance of our evolutionary brothers, the great apes (bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans), all this within the context of the immediate protection of both their populations in the wild, as well as their habitat or the liberation of those who are held captives. This book is also a request for their basic rights (life, freedom and to not be tortured physically or psychologically) as it is already stated by many scientists and some court rulings that have made headlines worldwide. This book, coordinated by Pedro Pozas Terrados, would not have been possible without the articles written by great scientific figures, conservationists, animalists, people of the legal world, journalists and writers. They break down preconceptions and support the great apes and their rights with their words, thus endorsing the fight in which the Great Ape Project has been working continuously for two decades. You will really enjoy reading from: Jose María Bermúdez de Castro Risueño, Jorge Riechmann, Emiliano Bruner, Biruté M. F. Galdikas, Miguel Angel Valladares, Isaac Vega, Pedro A. Studies in Latin American Literature and Culture in Honour of James Higgins

Autor: Stephen M. Hart , William Rowe

Número de Páginas: 264

The singular dedication of James Higgins to the study of Peruvian literature and culture is attested in the variety of work gathered here in his honour. His distinguished contribution to the shaping of this field began with his pioneering study of the poetry of Cesar Vallejo. The essays of this volume are gathered into two groups, the poet and the world, and narrative and social orders. There are a number of common threads that link them together and to themes which contribute to the notional map of Peruvian and Latin American literature and culture with which James Higgins’ own work is concerned. Distinguished authors in this volume include Astvaldsson, Belli, Bueno, Castro-Klaren, Cornejo Polar, Ferrari, Harris, Hart, Howard, Lambie, Millones, Moore, Puccinelli, Reedy, Rowe, Shaw, Silva-Santisteban, Sobrevilla, Swanson, Vilanova, and Wood.

Número de Páginas: 160

This volume includes a collection of chapters dealing with a number of aspects pertaining to the intersection between translation studies and gender studies. Although these disciplines have received the attention of numerous scholars since the 1970s, the current multidisciplinary approach in the humanities and social sciences involves the use of new methodological and analytical tools, which undoubtedly enrich and provide new insights in these fields. The articles in the present monograph represent the current state of translation studies from a gender perspective. From diverse methodological and ideological approaches, they deal with important aspects related to the construction and the representation of gender identity in processes of intersemiotic adaptation, of interlinguistic transfer and intercultural re-creation.

Diamela Eltit

Diamela Eltit

Autor: Mary Green

Número de Páginas: 198

The textual and linguistic emphasis on the maternal body in the narrative fiction of Diamela Eltit is fundamental to understanding the critical challenge posed by her work in the Chilean context. The Chilean author, Diamela Eltit, whose work spans the periods of the Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) and the Transition to Democracy (1990-), is one of the most innovative and challenging writers in contemporary Latin America. This book focuses on the representation of motherhood in Eltit's first six novels and, through a chronological series of close readings, argues that the maternal body and mother-child relations are crucial for an understanding ofthe critical challenge posed by Eltit's narrative oeuvre, too frequently dismissed as 'hermetic'. An analysis of the novels' structure and language reveals how Eltit seeks to reconfigure the foundations of symbolic structures andso incorporate the mother as a subject. Although the study draws on a feminist psychoanalytic framework to explore Eltit's continuous disarticulation of key concepts that emanate from the West, specifically in relation to the formation of gender and sexuality, the work of the major Chilean cultural theorist, Nelly ...
