Advances in Radiation Therapy

Autor: M. Guckenberger , S. E. Combs , D. Zips

Número de Páginas: 146

Developments in radiation oncology have been key to the tremendous progress made in the field in recent years. The combination of optimal systemic treatment and local therapy has resulted in continuing improved outcomes of cancer therapy. This progress forms the basis for current pre-clinical and clinical research which will strengthen the position of radiation oncology as an essential component of oncological care. This book summarizes recent advances in radiotherapy research and clinical patient care. Topics include radiobiology, radiotherapy technology, and particle therapy. Chapters cover a summary and analysis of recent developments in the search for biomarkers for precision radiotherapy, novel imaging possibilities and treatment planning, and advances in understanding the differences between photon and particle radiotherapy. Advances in Radiation Therapy is an invaluable source of information for scientists and clinicians working in the field of radiation oncology. It is also a relevant resource for those interested in the broad topic of radiotherapy in general.

Image-guided Radiation Therapy

Image-guided Radiation Therapy

Autor: Arno J. Mundt , John C. Roeske

Número de Páginas: 672

Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) is a true revolution in the field of radiation oncology. IGRT provides the unprecedented means of conforming does to the shape of the target tissues in 3-dimensions reducing the risk of complications thereby improving the quality of life of irradiated patients. Moreover, IGRT provides the means to deliver higher than conventional doses thus improving the chance of cure in these patients. Despite its established benefits, several barriers exist to the widespread clinical implementation of IGRT. In the past, great concerns existed regarding the large capital outlay needed for both software and hardware. This barrier is less relevant today given the increased reimbursements possible with IGRT. Today, the most significant barrier is education. IGRT is a fundamentally new approach to both treatment planning and delivery. Adoption of the IGRT approach entails new ways of thinking in regard to patient selection, treatment planning and quality assurance measures. Unfortunately, apart from a few University-based short courses, limited resources are available for the physician and physicist interested in learning IGRT.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy

Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy

Autor: Daniel M. Trifiletti , Samuel T. Chao , Arjun Sahgal , Jason P. Sheehan

Número de Páginas: 471

This new edition is a fully updated, comprehensive review of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT): its physics, clinical evidence, indications, and future directions. The utilization of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is increasing internationally because of several factors. First, it offers patients a local treatment option that has demonstrated effectiveness similar to traditional surgery without the morbidity of general anesthesia and open surgical resection. Second, recent advancements in the quality of scientific evidence supporting a SRS or SBRT-containing approach in patients continues to evolve and demonstrate favorable disease-specific outcomes with little, if any, toxicity in various anatomic disease sites and for various conditions including cancer, benign tumors, and other psychiatric and neurologic conditions. Third, and most provocatively, is the notion that definitive local therapy (i.e. SRS or SBRT) in patients with cancer can boost the immune system to fight cancer in other sites throughout the body. While traditional medical knowledge would suggest that all patients with...

Integrated Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology

Integrated Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology

Autor: J. J. B. Van Lanschot

Número de Páginas: 722

This textbook covers the entire spectrum of both benign and malignant gastrointestinal disorders. It is unique in its multidisciplinary approach and focuses on practical issues in day-to-day clinical care. The complexity of novel diagnostic modalities and the great variety in therapeutic options, both medically and surgically, require an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. Therefore, each topic in this textbook is first discussed by two gastroenterologists and subsequently by two digestive surgeons. If appropriate, interventional radiologists, internists and pathologists have also contributed. Specific subchapters on gastrointestinal malignancies have been added, written by medical and radiation oncologists. Nowadays, many hospitals and medical schools change their infrastructure from discipline-oriented to patient-/disease-oriented. In fact, this textbook describes what the medical gastroenterologist should know about surgical gastroenterology and vice-versa. A large number of drawings in full color helps the reader to get a clear picture of many technical procedures.

Hardbound. Since the first conference in 1966, there has been an enormous change, qualitatively as well as quantitatively in the application of computers in the field of radiotherapy. The fast technical development has made applications possible that only a few people dreamed of two decades ago. There is now hardly any field in radiotherapy where computers have no task. This book is a collection of papers dealing with all aspects of the use of computers in radiation therapy. It contains contributions by the majority of international scientists working in this field and thus presents a fair account of the state of the art. It is felt that a useful application of computers in radiotherapy is only possible by close cooperation of all disciplines involved.New applications of computer software and hardware on the computation, imaging, process control and quality assurance of radiation treatments are discussed, as are new developments in radiation dose calcu

Radiotherapy in Practice

Radiotherapy in Practice

Autor: Peter J. Hoskin

Número de Páginas: 492

External beam therapy is the most common form of radiotherapy, delivering ionizing radiation such as high-energy x-rays, gamma rays or electron beams directly into the location of the patient's tumour. The beam is generated externally, with no radioactive sources placed within the patient's body. The beams aim at destroying the cancer cells with minimal impact on the surrounding healthy tissue. The radiation oncologist will choose between different ways of administering the beams, such as linear accelerators, cobalt machines, or ortho-voltage x-ray machines. The three distinct stages of simulation, planning and treatment are critical to ensuring the highest rate of success. This book is an essential, practical guide to the use of external beam radiotherapy, highlighting the rapid technological advances made in recent years.

This book provides an in-depth introduction to radiotherapy physics. The emphasis in much of the work is on the clinical aspects of the field. Uniquely useful for both the physicist and non-physicist, Clinical Radiotherapy Physics gradually and sequentially develops each of its topics in clear, concise language. It includes important mathematical analyses, yet is written so that these sections can be skipped, if desired, without compromising understanding. The book is divided into seven parts covering basic physics (Parts I-II), equipment for radiotherapy (Part III), radiation dosimetry (Parts IV-V), radiation treatment planning (Part VI), and radiation safety and shielding (Part VII). For radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, and clinical physicists.
