“All families and genera”

Autor: Isabel Moskowich , Inés Lareo , Gonzalo Camiña

Número de Páginas: 328

“All families and genera”: Exploring the Corpus of English Life Sciences Texts aims at exploring scientific writing in late Modern English. This volume is the fourth of its kind devoted to the analysis of the relations between language and different scientific disciplines from 1700 to 1900. Here, forty texts on biology and related fields as compiled in the Corpus of English Life Sciences Texts (CELiST) constitute the basis for the fifteen studies describing scientific discourse on methodological issues, the period and the status of the discipline itself as well as pilot studies. CELiST is accompanied by an updated version of the Coruña Corpus Tool (CCT), a purpose-designed software. Both the tool and the corpus are freely accessible at the Repositorio Universidade Coruña: CCT at http://hdl.handle.net/2183/21850and CELiST at https://ruc.udc.es/dspace/handle/2183/25720(DOI: https://doi.org/10.17979/spudc.9788497497848). The book is addressed to an international readership. It is of interest for university libraries as well as other academic institutions/societies and individual scholars specialised in corpus linguistics and historical linguistics all over the world.

Pottery Economics in Mesoamerica

Pottery Economics in Mesoamerica

Autor: Christopher A. Pool , George J. Bey

Número de Páginas: 335

Pottery is one of the most important classes of artifacts available to archaeologists and anthropologists. Every year, volumes of data are generated detailing ceramic production, distribution, and consumption. How these data can be interpreted in relation to the social and cultural framework of prehistoric societies in Mesoamerica is the subject of this book. Nine chapters written by some of the most well known and respected scholars in the field offer readers an in-depth look at key advances from the past fifteen years. These scholars examine ethnoarchaeological studies and the Preclassic/Formative, Classic, and Postclassic periods and cover geographic areas from eastern to central Mesoamerica. In a series of case studies, contributors address a range of new and developing theories and methods for inferring the technological, organizational, and social dimensions of pottery economics, and draw on a range of sociopolitical examples. Specific topics include the impacts and costs of innovations, the role of the producer in technological choices, the outcomes when errors in vessel formation are tolerated or rectified, the often undocumented multiple lives and uses of ceramic pieces,...

Population and Development in the 21st Century - Between the Anthropocene and Anthropocentrism

Population and Development in the 21st Century - Between the Anthropocene and Anthropocentrism

Autor: Parfait M. Eloundou-enyegue

Número de Páginas: 342

This book captures some of the emergent topics and methods in demography at the turn of this 21st century. Like all social sciences, the concerns and tools of demography must evolve with the times. As new technologies expand data management opportunities, and as a changing world faces new demographic issues, the field of demographic research must expand as well. The chapters in the book rise to this challenge by embracing new questions or new approaches to classic questions about demographic processes and their link to development, including inequality, health, migration, and youth across the world.

Caribbean Paleodemography

Caribbean Paleodemography

Autor: L. Antonio Curet

Número de Páginas: 288

A high significant discussion of Caribbean archaeology and a fascinating introduction to paleodemography According to the European chronicles, at the time of contact, the Greater Antilles were inhabited by the Taino or Arawak Indians, who were organized in hierarchical societies. Since its inception Caribbean archaeology has used population as an important variable in explaining many social, political, and economic processes such as migration, changes in subsistence systems, and the development of institutionalized social stratification. In Caribbean Paleodemography, L. Antonio Curet argues that population has been used casually by Caribbean archaeologists and proposes more rigorous and promising ways in which demographic factors can be incorporated in our modeling of past human behavior. He analyzes a number of demographic issues in island archaeology at various levels of analysis, including inter- and intra-island migration, carrying capacity, population structures, variables in prehistory, cultural changes, and the relationship with material culture and social development. With this work, Curet brings together the diverse theories on Greater Antilles island populations and the...

Alton's Paradox

Alton's Paradox

Autor: Nicolas Poppe

Número de Páginas: 470

Alton's Paradox builds upon extensive archival and primary research, but uses a single text as its point of departure—a 1934 article by the Hungarian American cinematographer John Alton in the Hollywood-published International Photographer. Writing from Argentina, Alton paradoxically argues of cine nacional, "The possibilities are enormous, but not until foreign technicians will take the matter in their hands and with foreign organization will there be local industry." Nicolas Poppe argues that Alton succinctly articulates a line of thought commonly held across Latin America during the early sound period but little explored by scholars: that foreign labor was pivotal to the rise of national film industries. In tracking this paradox from Hollywood to Mexico to Argentina and beyond, Poppe reconsiders a series of notions inextricably tied to traditional film historiography, including authorship, (dis)continuation, intermediality, labor, National Cinema, and transnationalism. Wide-angled views of national film industries complement close-up analyses of the work of José Mojica, Alex Phillips, Juan Orol, Ángel Mentasti, and Tito Davison.

Irrigation Horticulture In Highland Guatemala

Irrigation Horticulture In Highland Guatemala

Autor: Kent Mathewson

Número de Páginas: 183

New evidence that the ancient Mayas practiced intensive, often irrigated, agriculture on a massive scale has forced revision in current thinking about that civilization. Nutrition Programs in the Third World

Nutrition Programs in the Third World

Autor: James E. Austin

Número de Páginas: 474

Abstract: Case studies identifying and describing actual problem situations facing decision-makers trying to design, promote, and manage Third World nutrition programs are presented. Conceptual readings derived from research on nutrition programs present a comprehensive view of nutrition policy and management problems and issues. Half of the people in the developing world are malnourished (over 1 billion do not meet daily calorie requirements, with 895 million having calorie deficits exceeding 250 cal/day). Malnutrition is most prevalent in Asia (78%), followed by Africa (10%). Both continents have 60% of their population with 250 cal/day deficits. Material covered includes: international agencies and programs dealing with malnutrition; various nutrition programs and operating problems in specific countries; supplementary feeding programs and formulated foods; fortification; nutritional enhancement of corn via genetic breeding; attempts to improve nutrition via changing the food marketing system and the use of subsidies; combined nutrition-population-health intervention programs; and design and implementation of a national nutrition plan. Books in the Catholic World during the Early Modern Period

Books in the Catholic World during the Early Modern Period

Autor: Natalia Maillard Álvarez

Número de Páginas: 254

The Reformation is often alluded to as Gutenberg’s child. Could it then be said that the Counter-Reformation was his step-child? The close relationship between the Reformation, the printing press and books has received extensive, historiographical attention, which is clearly justified; however, the links between books and the Catholic world have often been limited to a tale of censorship and repression. The current volume looks beyond this, with a series of papers that aim to shed new light on the complex relationships between Catholicism and books during the early modern period, before and after the religious schism, with special focus on trade, common reads and the mechanisms used to control readership in different territories, together with the similarities between the Catholic and the Protestant worlds. Contributors include: Stijn Van Rossem, Rafael M. Pérez García, Pedro J. Rueda Ramírez, Idalia García Aguilar, Bianca Lindorfer, Natalia Maillard Álvarez, and Adrien Delmas.

The Application of GIS Technologies in the Roman Period

The Application of GIS Technologies in the Roman Period

Autor: Pedro Trapero Fernández

Número de Páginas: 233

Using a selection of archaeological cases studies from the Roman period in the Mediterranean region, Pedro Trapero Fernández shows how GIS technologies can be employed in the creation of spatial models to reproduce historical realities. An increasing number of researchers use this digital humanities tool as a means to model both territory and landscape. This book compiles different spatial models under a unified methodology described in separated chapters, such as mobility and visibility models, and discusses their limitations and potential for implementation in archaeological contexts. The result is a detailed analysis of each method, which consequently results in an accessible manual for understanding GIS technologies. Designed for students and scholars with varying degrees of training in GIS, who intend to carry out spatial analysis and historical models, the approach of this book establishes a reference framework to work with GIS technologies in other historical periods. Trapero concludes by discussing the future of GIS and spatial analysis, and how it can be studied and used as a methodological approach in archaeological practice and research.

Número de Páginas: 411

This book and its case studies focuses on typical local products and breeds, descriptions of the production systems and conservation techniques of endangered breeds/products in the Mediterranean area. Traditional and extensive systems, involving local breeds, which meet the needs of the population requiring safe foods at a reasonable costs, are validated for their specific meaning to the region. It is acknowledged that natural constraints of the Mediterranean area of climate and geography, make it unfavourable to mass production at low cost. Profit related aspects are discussed considering the different economic realities of the northern part of the basin compared to the southern part. Characteristics of typical animal production with consideration for positive and negative impacts on production systems and on the environment as well as the need to adjust to climate uncertainty and seasonal variability of feed resources, is also discussed. A focus is given to the following areas: animal production economy and social impact in the Mediterranean area; utilisation of natural resources and environmental impact of the animal production systems; possibilities for improving traditional...

Gunboats, Corruption, and Claims

Gunboats, Corruption, and Claims

Autor: Brian Mcbeth

Número de Páginas: 322

The Cipriano Castro administration, which ruled Venezuela from 1899 to 1908, was characterized by a series of internal and external political crises which seemed capable of toppling it at any moment. In 1901, a number of foreign countries provided financial backing to Castro's former allies, united under the leadership of Manuel Antonio Matos, who almost brought the government down. In the midst of this civil war, Germany, the United Kingdom and later Italy instituted what came to be known as the peaceful blockade of Venezuela to force the government to honor its foreign debts. The claims and counter-claims stemming from the conflict would eventually force the three foreign countries to sever diplomatic relations in the ensuing years. Far from its portrayal as a nationalist champion, the Castro administration was, in McBeth's findings, more focused on the accumulation of personal wealth than on defense of Venezuelan interests. Castro would pay dearly for his misdeeds, losing power in a 1908 coup to Juan Vicente Gómez and remaining in exile until his death in 1924. The conflict would prove to be a watershed in relations with Latin America, as the United States modified its own...
