The Golden Bough

The Golden Bough

Autor: James George Frazer

Número de Páginas: 880

James George Frazer's seminal work, "The Golden Bough," is a comprehensive study of mythology and religion that intricately weaves together anthropology, comparative religion, and folklore. Recognized for its innovative literary style, Frazer employs a narrative that is both richly descriptive and analytical, traversing the ancient practices of various cultures to explore the universality of human belief systems. With a focus on rituals, myths, and the symbolic significance of nature, the book situates itself within the early 20th-century intellectual context, responding to the era's growing interest in the cultural underpinnings of civilization and the evolution of human thought. As a pioneer in the field of social anthropology, Frazer's extensive academic background and personal explorations through the mythological landscape of diverse cultures informed his understanding of human behavior. His interest in the connection between religion and magic arose from a desire to decipher the common threads that bind humanity's spiritual expressions, ultimately leading him to gather an immense array of sources that challenge the Eurocentric narratives of his time. "The Golden Bough" is a...

Golden bough

Golden bough

Autor: J. G. Frazer

Número de Páginas: 809

WHO does not know Turner's picture of the Golden Bough? The scene, suffused with the golden glow of imagination in which the divine mind of Turner steeped and transfigured even the fairest natural landscape, is a dream-like vision of the little woodland lake of Nemi-"Diana's Mirror," as it was called by the ancients. No one who has seen that calm water, lapped in a green hollow of the Alban hills, can ever forget it. The two characteristic Italian villages which slumber on its banks, and the equally Italian palace whose terraced gardens descend steeply to the lake, hardly break the stillness and even the solitariness of the scene. Diana herself might still linger by this lonely shore, still haunt these woodlands wild.

James George Frazer attempted to define the shared elements of religious belief and scientific thought, discussing fertility rites, human sacrifice, the dying god, the scapegoat, and many other symbols and practices whose influences had extended into 20th-century culture. His thesis is that old religions were fertility cults that revolved around the worship and periodic sacrifice of a sacred king. The Golden Bough By Sir James George Frazer

The Golden Bough By Sir James George Frazer

Autor: Sir James George Frazer

Número de Páginas: 1541

The primary aim of this book is to explain the remarkable rule which regulated the succession to the priesthood of Diana at Aricia. When I first set myself to solve the problem more than thirty years ago, I thought that the solution could be propounded very briefly, but I soon found that to render it probable or even intelligible it was necessary to discuss certain more general questions, some of which had hardly been broached before. In successive editions the discussion of these and kindred topics has occupied more and more space, the enquiry has branched out in more and more directions, until the two volumes of the original work have expanded into twelve. Meantime a wish has often been expressed that the book should be issued in a more compendious form. This abridgment is an attempt to meet the wish and thereby to bring the work within the range of a wider circle of readers. While the bulk of the book has been greatly reduced, I have endeavoured to retain its leading principles, together with an amount of evidence sufficient to illustrate them clearly. The language of the original has also for the most part been preserved, though here and there the exposition has been somewhat...

The Golden Madness: writings from the Queensland Gold Rush

The Golden Madness: writings from the Queensland Gold Rush

Autor: James Moylan

Número de Páginas: 182

This volume contains a small selection of my favorite writings relating to the gold rush period in Queensland. I hope to provide the reader with a glimpse of the everyday topics and events that were of interest to the pioneer miners in the north of Australia. By largely avoiding sterile historical accounts in favor of primary texts in which personal opinions and first person observations are unselfconsciously expressed I endeavor to provide a sense of the social complexities of this era. The 'common sense' of this period is not our common sense. Many of the sentiments and prejudices expressed are jarring to a modern sensibility. Racist attitudes are unambiguously expressed. Empire is a stolid reality. Women are inferior to men. The 'great chain of being' provides an all-encompassing teleology by which all things under heaven might be ordered. Please enjoy a journey to the strangest land of them all - the past. James Moylan Researcher & Author
