Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis

Autor: Robert M Herndon, Md

Número de Páginas: 255

Knowledge has been described as being like an expanding sphere with the volume of knowledge contacting a surface on the unknown. This new comprehensive review of the many fields of basic and clinical research that impact our understanding of multiple sclerosis has its basis in this premise. In doing research on MS, it is not enough to know clinical neurology or neurochemistry or neuroanatomy or pathology; it is important to understand the many other areas that relate to them. This volume provides an overview of MS-related research and will benefit many investigators in the field and help to advance our efforts to cure this, thus far intractable, disease. It is now more than 160 years since the first clinical-pathological descriptions of cases of multiple sclerosis and more than 130 years since the classic clinical description and development of diagnostic criteria by Charcot, yet MS remains an enigma. After decades of intense effort to find the cause, no cause has been clearly identified and the disease remains poorly understood. Despite the introduction of immunomodulatory therapies and immunosuppressive regimens, MS remains a devastating disease. While a great deal of progress...

Mechanisms of Disease Pathogenesis in Multiple Sclerosis summarizes our current understanding on MS and its clinical features and monitoring with available biomarkers, focusing on mechanisms that drive disease pathogenesis and their control by genetic, environmental factors and novel therapies for disease management. The book is written for neurologists, neuroimmunologists and clinical, translational and basic researchers interested in mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease which targets the central nervous system (CNS). It is the most common cause of non-traumatic neurological disability in young adults with a prevalence of 1 in 1000 and increasing, hence the importance of this book. - Summarizes our current understanding of Multiple Sclerosis - Discusses clinical features and available biomarker monitoring - Focuses on mechanisms that drive disease pathogenesis

Characteristic clinical immune phenotypes and molecular mechanisms associated with inflammatory diseases, 2nd edition

Characteristic clinical immune phenotypes and molecular mechanisms associated with inflammatory diseases, 2nd edition

Autor: Chengjin Gao , Shuming Pan , Kun Xiong

Número de Páginas: 329

The systemic inflammatory response is evident in inflammatory diseases, and the immune system secretes many cytokines involved, resulting in a robust immune response. For example, the pathogenesis of sepsis includes abnormal immune cell activation in the early stages as well as sepsis-related immunosuppression. During the immunosuppressive phase, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, Th17 cells, and ?d T cells are reduced while regulatory T cells increase. At the same time, T lymphocytes and neutrophils, as immune effector cells, interact with each other and play a key role in regulating the immune response to immune-inflammatory diseases. The increased release of neutrophil extracellular trap networks (NETs) by neutrophils leads to a significant upregulation of NETs-DNA-MPO, which further aggravates the septic inflammatory response and organ functional impairment. Therefore, it is important to deeply investigate the characteristic clinical immune phenotypes and molecular mechanisms associated with inflammatory diseases, and targeting therapies against them may provide new ideas for the precise treatment of diseases. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide a forum to advance research...

Número de Páginas: 467

Clinical Neurimmunology is the major reference text in the field, providing broad and comprehensive coverage of the interaction between the nervous and immune systems in both normal and diseased states. Understanding this interaction is fundamental to developing therapeutic approaches to disease and injury of the nervous system that are currently only marginally amenable to therapy. Neuroimmunology is a well-recognised and growing specialty world wide, both at the basic science and clinical level. It is a fast moving field and this is the most up to date text available. Chapters are dedicated to the role of the immune system in disorders affecting both the central and peripheral nervous systems, including important neurodegenerative diseases (such as multiple sclerosis and HIV-related neural degeneration) which cause life-long disability. Extensive coverage is given to a whole array of immune-directed therapies. The book has a strong international team of well respected, high profile editors and authors. The first edition published to extensive and positive reviews and has established itself as the principal reference source in the field. This second edition summarizes recent...

El diario de un hombre decepcionado

El diario de un hombre decepcionado

Autor: W.n.p. Barbellion

Barbellion...
