Summary of Steven E. Koonin's Unsettled

Summary of Steven E. Koonin's Unsettled

Autor: Everest Media,

Número de Páginas: 38

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The questions of influence, response, and impact are the core of climate science. They are similar to the questions parents try to guide their children’s development through example and reward good behavior, and punish bad. #2 The science we learn in school is a collection of certainties about the natural world. However, each of these facts was hard won through a succession of logical inferences based on many observations or experiments. #3 The IPCC has established a second set of calibrated terms to indicate confidence in a given finding. Confidence is a qualitative judgment that depends on the number, quality, and agreement of different lines of evidence. The five levels of confidence are Very high, High, Medium, Low, and Very low. #4 The most prominent series of assessment reports is produced under the auspices of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was established in 1988. The IPCC issued its first assessment in 1990, and the Sixth Assessment Report is expected in the summer of 2021.

Buy now to get the main key ideas from Steven E. Koonin’s Unsettled While human activities are indeed influencing the Earth’s climate, the degree of their impact is still subject to scientific debate. In Unsettled (2021), theoretical physicist Steven E. Koonin challenges some commonly held beliefs about climate change, such as the idea that simply mitigating our emissions would solve our problems. He questions the level of certainty often presented in public discourse and details areas where scientific knowledge is still evolving. Koonin highlights the necessity of carefully evaluating the costs and benefits of climate policies, emphasizing the importance of realistic and achievable solutions.

The Logic of Chance

The Logic of Chance

Autor: Eugene V. Koonin

Número de Páginas: 530

The Logic of Chance offers a reappraisal and a new synthesis of theories, concepts, and hypotheses on the key aspects of the evolution of life on earth in light of comparative genomics and systems biology. The author presents many specific examples from systems and comparative genomic analysis to begin to build a new, much more detailed, complex, and realistic picture of evolution. The book examines a broad range of topics in evolutionary biology including the inadequacy of natural selection and adaptation as the only or even the main mode of evolution; the key role of horizontal gene transfer in evolution and the consequent overhaul of the Tree of Life concept; the central, underappreciated evolutionary importance of viruses; the origin of eukaryotes as a result of endosymbiosis; the concomitant origin of cells and viruses on the primordial earth; universal dependences between genomic and molecular-phenomic variables; and the evolving landscape of constraints that shape the evolution of genomes and molecular phenomes. "Koonin's account of viral and pre-eukaryotic evolution is undoubtedly up-to-date. His "mega views" of evolution (given what was said above) and his cosmological...

Genetics, Evolution and Radiation

Genetics, Evolution and Radiation

Autor: Victoria L. Korogodina , Carmel E Mothersill , Sergey G. Inge-vechtomov , Colin B. Seymour

Número de Páginas: 555

This book is dedicated to the great scientist and outstanding individual Nikolay Wladimirovich Timofeeff-Ressovsky. The book brings together a number of brief stories/essays about Timofeeff-Ressovsky including “Stories told by himself”, and scientific chapters addressing his major research areas: genetics, radiobiology, radiation ecology and epidemiology, and evolution. Timofeeff-Ressovsky contributed to several fields of biology and established new directions of scientific research. He often repeated the phrase, which would later become famous: “Science should not be approached with the ferocity of wild animals”. In keeping with that philosophy, the issues discussed here are still open. Each scientific part starts with a current review; the chapters present leading scientific schools and views. The main theme discussed in the genetics part is mutation variability in the context of linear (replication, transcription, translation) and conformational template processes, and its dependence on phylogenetic group. In turn, the radiobiology chapters focus on the reorganization of DNA, cell, and population variability under low-dose irradiation, sparking indirect processes and...

Microbial genomics challenge Darwin

Microbial genomics challenge Darwin

Autor: Didier Raoult , Eugene V. Koonin

Número de Páginas: 179

The 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birthday was celebrated in 2009, making the concept of Darwinism even more popular than at the time it was originally proposed, to the extent that it has acquired quasi-religious status. His theory revolves around a Tree of Life in which all living organisms are considered to have descended from a single ancestor, and each node represents a common ancestor. It comprises hierarchy and dichotomy, which are typical characteristics of the post-biblical 19th century vision. Indeed, according to post-modern philosophy (also called the French theory) the majority of theories, including scientific ones, are based only on meta-narratives expressing the influence of a culture at a given time. Buddhism or Hinduism may have generated a very different story of evolution. Our way of thinking about life, and the way we describe evolution, have changed radically in the 21st century due to the genomic revolution. Comparative genome analyses have demonstrated that gene repertoires are characterized by plasticity, and there is strong evidence that nearly all genes have been exchanged at some point. Genomic data show that the genetic information of living organisms ...

Time-dependent Methods for Quantum Dynamics

Time-dependent Methods for Quantum Dynamics

Autor: Kenneth C. Kulander

Número de Páginas: 612

This collection of articles clearly demonstrates that recent developments in time-dependent computational methods for quantum processes have resulted in significant contributions to the understanding of a remarkable broad spectrum of physical and chemical processes. These advances happened for two reasons. First, substantial improvements in the tools we use have occurred over the past decade and second there is a remarkable decrease in timescale over which observations of dynamical processes can be carried out. The papers presented here treat a wide variety of topics, including laser-induced dynamics by intense fields and short pulses, spectroscopy, tunneling, resonances, photodissociation, atomic collisions and gas-surface collisions, chemical reactions, molecular energy transfer, intramolecular relaxation, the influence of phase-space structure on quantum dynamics, nonadiabatic processes in condensed phases, systems in baths, nuclear collisions, fission, and fusion. The methods used in this issue include wave-packet propagation, Fourier transforms, time-dependent mean-field (SCF) methods, time-dependent correlation functions, path integrals, combined quantum/classical methods,...

Theoretical Methods in Medium-Energy and Heavy-Ion Physics

Theoretical Methods in Medium-Energy and Heavy-Ion Physics

Autor: K. W. Mcvoy , William Albert Friedman

Número de Páginas: 776

A NATO Advanced Studies Institute was held June 12-23, 1978, at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. It was a topical Institute in theoretical nuclear physics and had the some what novel feature of focussing not on a single topic but on two closely allied ones: pion-nucleus and heavy-ion physics. These two fields. both dedicated to the investigation of short-wave length properties of nuclei, have many techniques and concepts in cornmon, and essentially become one in the topic of relativistic heavy-ion physics. The purpose of including both in a single Institute was to encourage the practitioners in each of these fields to learn from those in the other; to judge from the liveli ness of the questioning which ensued, the purpose was well-served indeed. Because the Institute was viewed as one which served both educational and research ends, the lecturers took particular pains to develop their subjects in a careful, coherent sequence. The result is a compendium of advanced techniques and current results in these two rapidly-expanding fields of nuclear theory which should serve interested physicists as an ideal introduction to the fields. In addition to the support...
