In English, We Say… In Poetry, We Say…

In English, We Say… In Poetry, We Say…

Autor: Louisa Ligeron

Número de Páginas: 72

In English, We Say… In Poetry, We Say… What if everyday speech could be transformed into something breathtakingly poetic? Why say "I'm tired" when you could whisper, "Sleep evades me like a lover lost to the night"? Why settle for "It’s raining" when you could declare, "The heavens weep silver tears upon the earth"? This book takes ordinary phrases and turns them into extraordinary expressions, blending humor, drama, romance, and gothic elegance into a captivating collection of poetic transformations. Inside, you’ll find: * Romantic confessions that sound like Shakespearean love letters. * Dramatic expressions fit for gothic novels. * Hilarious exaggerations that turn daily struggles into poetic tragedies. * Poetic wisdom inspired by Shakespeare, Poe, Rumi, Frost, and more. Whether you want to speak like a poet, write more expressively, or simply appreciate the beauty of words, this book will inspire you to see language in a new light. In English, we say: "Read this book." In poetry, we say: "Turn these pages and let your soul dance with words."

Reading Poetry

Reading Poetry

Autor: Tom Furniss , Michael Bath

Número de Páginas: 667

Reading Poetry offers a comprehensive and accessible guide to the art of reading poetry. Discussing more than 200 poems by more than 100 writers, ranging from ancient Greece and China to the twenty-first century, the book introduces readers to the skills and the critical and theoretical awareness that enable them to read poetry with enjoyment and insight. This third edition has been significantly updated in response to current developments in poetry and poetic criticism, and includes many new examples and exercises, new chapters on ‘world poetry’ and ‘eco-poetry’, and a greater emphasis throughout on American poetry, including the impact traditional Chinese poetry has had on modern American poetry. The seventeen carefully staged chapters constitute a complete apprenticeship in reading poetry, leading readers from specific features of form and figurative language to larger concerns with genre, intertextuality, Caribbean poetry, world poetry, and the role poetry can play in response to the ecological crisis. The workshop exercises at the end of each chapter, together with an extensive glossary of poetic and critical terms, and the number and range of poems analysed and...

'Kubla Khan' Poetic Structure, Hypnotic Quality, and Cognitive Style

'Kubla Khan' Poetic Structure, Hypnotic Quality, and Cognitive Style

Autor: Reuven Tsur

Número de Páginas: 269

This book endorses Coleridge's statement: "nothing can permanently please which does not contain in itself the reason why it is so". It conceives of "Kubla Khan" as of a hypnotic poem, in which the "obtrusive rhythms" produce a hypnotic, emotionally heightened response, giving false security to the "Platonic Censor", so that our imagination is left free to explore higher levels of uncertainty. Critics intolerant of uncertainty tend to account for the poem's effect by extraneous background information. The book consists of three parts employing different research methods. Part One is speculative, and discusses three aspects of a complex aesthetic event: the verbal structure of "Kubla Khan", validity in interpretation, and the influence of the critic's decision style on his critical decisions. The other two parts are empirical. Part Two explores reader response to gestalt qualities of rhyme patterns and hypnotic poems in perspective of decision style and professional training. Part Three submits four recordings of the poem by leading British actors to instrumental investigation.

Conversations with Stanley Kunitz

Conversations with Stanley Kunitz

Autor: Kent P. Ljungquist

Número de Páginas: 220

“He again tops the crowd—he surpasses himself, the old iron brought to the white heat of simplicity.” That's what Robert Lowell said of the poetry of Stanley Kunitz (1905–2006) and his evolving artistry. The interviews and conversations contained in this volume derive from four decades of Kunitz's distinguished career. They touch on aesthetic motifs in his poetry, the roots of his work, his friendships in the sister arts of painting and sculpture, his interactions with Lowell and Theodore Roethke, and his comments on a host of poets: John Keats, Walt Whitman, Randall Jarrell, Wallace Stevens, and Anna Akhmatova. Kunitz emerged from a mid-sized industrial town in central Massachusetts, surviving family tragedy and a sense of personal isolation and loneliness, to become an eloquent spokesman for poetry and for the power of the human imagination. Kunitz has commented, “If we want to know what it felt like to be alive at any given moment in the long odyssey of the race, it is to poetry we must turn.” His own odyssey from “metaphysical loneliness” to a sense of community with fellow writers and artists—by building institutions like Poets House and the Fine Arts Work...

Autor: Williamsji Maveli

Número de Páginas: 255

Williamsji Maveli’s poetic analysis is a deep expression of the noblest human emotions: of love and sympathy, of awareness of the infinite value of life, of the realizations of the eternal truth through the strokes of individual talents of creativity. Poetry focuses on the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm. Imagination is the ability of the mind to be creative or resourceful and be active without worries; every word has its own meaning, detached from the actual word it’s described by. Poetry achieves a different level of understanding by allowing us to really experience life through the emotions and experiences of others; it is a blend of imagination and truth. Poetry is the art of apprehending and interpreting ideas by the faculty of imagination; the art of idealizing in thought and in expression. Poetry is all those put together in a single volume of human brilliance! And a poet’s life and analytical studies belongs to the future as well as the present. A true poet lives not only in his contemporary time but also in the time of the future with his cultural heritage projecting the eternal essence of human sympathy and consciousness.
