Ictionimia andaluza

Ictionimia andaluza

Red Cell Membrane Transport in Health and Disease

Red Cell Membrane Transport in Health and Disease

Autor: Ingolf Bernhardt , J. Clive Ellory

Número de Páginas: 761

The red cell has been a focus for scientific and medical investigation since the ear liest times. A higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate was associated with diseases (usually pyrexias) before the thermometer was invented. Furthermore, ever since the early observers Swammerdam and Leeuvenhoek saw discrete corpuscles in samples of blood using the first microscopes, there has been a significant scientific interest in the structure and function of red blood cells. The later discovery that red cells were not spherical, but biconcave discs introduced a scientific puzzle which is still not completely resolved today, and identified the need for a detailed knowledge of the plasma membrane composition and structure, and its interaction with the cytoskeleton. Important concepts like the lipid bilayer, together with its more recent refinement as asymmetric in phospholipid composition led to the identification of translocases involved in actively maintaining its composition. Understanding the mechanics of red cell deformation as these biconcave discs traverse capillaries was advanced by the pioneering work of Rand and Burton in the Sixties, and progressed by Evans, Skalak and others. Based on ...

Mascotas

Mascotas

Autor: Jose Manuel Ferro Veiga

Neonatology and Blood Transfusion

Neonatology and Blood Transfusion

Autor: C. Th. Smit-sibinga

Número de Páginas: 294

Proceedings of the Twenty-Eighth International Symposium on Blood Transfusion, Groningen, NL, Organized by the Sanquin Division Blood Bank North-East, Groningen. It is in many ways fitting that the last of these international symposia on blood transfusion should end with neonatal blood transfusion. The most fragile, least well studied and most at risk population requires special care and concern. We need to expand our knowledge of their unique physiology, biochemical pathways and in planning treatment and interventions, always "do no harm." This proceedings of the last Groningen symposium presents a wealth of information on developmental immunology, the molecular basis of haematopoeisis, physiological basis of bleeding and thrombosis, transfusion risks and benefits and lastly, future therapies. Infants provide us with much to learn but in turn they will be the providers of (through cord blood) and the recipients of (through cellular engineering) the best that science can offer. Translational research, which has been the thrust of these presentations for 28 years, will benefit them in a way that no scientist could have ever predicted.

Molecular Biology of B-Cell and T-Cell Development

Molecular Biology of B-Cell and T-Cell Development

Autor: John G. Monroe , Ellen Rothenberg

Número de Páginas: 582

Despite the tremendous diversity of the cells of the hematopoietic system, they are all derived from common precursor cells that are generated in the fetus and persist into adult life. In this regard, Band T lymphocytes, which comprise the two arms of the antigen-specific and inducible immune system, though functionally very different, are descendants of the same stem cell precursor. In the past several years, we have witnessed an explosion of information regarding the process by which differentiation of B-and T-cells from stem cells occurs. This information, like the answers to most important biological questions, has come from multiple and diverse directions. Because all hematopoietic cells arise from common precursors, complex regulatory processes must be involved in determining commitment to various lineages. Understanding commitment to the B- or T-cell lineage remains incomplete; however, identification of transcription factors necessary for progression along specific B-and T-cell pathways suggests that we are on the verge of understanding the molecules involved in the initial fate-determining steps. Studies of this type previously could be accomplished only in nonmammalian...

Transcription Factors

Transcription Factors

Autor: Katya Ravid , Jonathan D. Licht

Número de Páginas: 640

Transcription Factors Normal and Malignant Development of Blood Cells Katya Ravid and Jonathan Licht The role of transcription factors in activating specific genes in blood cells is an important facet of hematopoiesis. Equally important, however, is the pursuit of genes rearranged and aberrantly activated in leukemias (blood malignancies). Transcription Factors: Normal and Malignant Development of Blood Cells focuses on those major transcription factors involved in activation of lineage-specific gene expression during normal versus malignant development of specific blood lineages, as revealed from gene promoter studies, knockout of transcription factors in mice models, and the identification and characterization of chromosomal rearrangement in human blood leukemias. This complete digest of current transcription factor data offers comprehensive coverage of the myriad of transcription factors in blood cell development, composed by established experts in the field. In addition to updating the reader on the connection between chromosomal translocations involving transcription factors and cellular transformation leading to leukemia, Transcription Factors also reviews such subjects as:...

Myofibrillogenesis

Myofibrillogenesis

Autor: Dipak K. Dube

Número de Páginas: 281

Myofibrillogenesis has been studied extensively over the last 100 years. Until recently, we have not had a comprehensive understanding of this fundamental process. The emergence of new technologies in molecular and cellular biology, combined with classical embryology, have started to unravel some of the complexities of myofibril assembly in striated muscles. In striated muscles, the contractile proteins are arranged in a highly ordered three dimensional lattice known as the sarcomere. The assembly of a myofibril involves the precise ordering of several proteins into a linear array of sarcomeres. Multiple isoforms in many of these proteins further complicate the process, making it difficult to define the precise role of each component. This volume has been compiled as a comprehensive reference on myofibrillogenesis. In addition, the book includes reviews on myofibrillar disarray under various pathological conditions, such as familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (FHC), and incorporates a section on the conduction system in the heart. Much of the information in this volume has not been described elsewhere. Presented in a manner to be of value to students and teachers alike,...

El principio Zen

El principio Zen

Autor: Osho

Stem Cells Research Compendium

Stem Cells Research Compendium

Autor: Prasad S. Koka

Número de Páginas: 462

The two broad categories of mammalian stem cells exist: embryonic stem cells, derived from blastocysts, and adult stem cells, which are found in adult tissues. In a developing embryo, stem cells are able to differentiate into all of the specialised embryonic tissues. In adult organisms, stem cells and progenitor cells act as a repair system for the body, replenishing specialised cells. As stem cells can be readily grown and transformed into specialised tissues such as muscles or nerves through cell culture, their use in medical therapies has been proposed. In particular, embryonic cell lines, autologous embryonic stem cells generated therapeutic cloning, and highly plastic adult stem cells from the umbilical cord blood or bone marrow are touted as promising candidates. Among the many applications of stem cell research are nervous system diseases, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune diseases as well as Parkinson's disease, end-stage kidney disease, liver failure, cancer, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease.
