Patronages et clientélismes 1550-1750 (France, Angleterre, Espagne, Italie)

Patronages et clientélismes 1550-1750 (France, Angleterre, Espagne, Italie)

Autor: Collectif

Padre Pio

Padre Pio

Autor: Sergio Luzzatto

Número de Páginas: 384

The first historical appraisal of the astonishing life and times of a controversial twentieth-century saint Padre Pio is one of the world's most beloved holy figures, more popular in Italy than the Virgin Mary and even Jesus. His tomb is the most visited Catholic shrine anywhere, drawing more devotees than Lourdes. His miraculous feats included the ability to fly and to be present in two places at once; an apparition of Padre Pio in midair prevented Allied warplanes from dropping bombs on his hometown. Most notable of all were his stigmata, which provoke heated controversy to this day. Were they truly God-given? A psychosomatic response to extreme devotion? Or, perhaps, the self-inflicted wounds of a charlatan? Now acclaimed historian Sergio Luzzatto offers a pioneering investigation of this remarkable man and his followers. Neither a worshipful hagiography nor a sensationalist exposé, Padre Pio is a nuanced examination of the persistence of mysticism in contemporary society and a striking analysis of the links between Catholicism and twentieth-century politics. Granted unprecedented access to the Vatican archives, Luzzatto has also unearthed a letter from Padre Pio himself in...

Gomorrah

Gomorrah

Autor: Roberto Saviano

Número de Páginas: 324

From the author of ZeroZeroZero comes Gomorrah, a bold and engrossing piece of investigative writing and one heroic young man's impassioned story of a place under the rule of a murderous organization. With a preface to mark the ten year anniversary of publication, Roberto Saviano's groundbreaking and utterly compelling book is a major international bestseller which has to date sold 750,000 copies in Italy alone. A groundbreaking study and a searing exposé, Gomorrah is the astonishing true story of the renowned crime organization the Camorra, known by insiders as ‘the System’. With a global reach, large stakes in construction, high fashion, illegal drugs and toxic waste disposal, the Camorra exerts a malign grip on cities and villages along the Neapolitan coast. In pursuit of his subject, Roberto Saviano worked as an assistant at a Chinese textile manufacturer and on a construction site, both controlled by 'the System', and as a waiter at a Camorra wedding. Born in Naples, he recalls seeing his first murder at the age of fourteen, and how his own father, a doctor, suffered a brutal beating for trying to help an eighteen-year-old victim, left for dead in the street. Since...

An Intersectional Approach to Counseling Children and Adolescents With Health Conditions

An Intersectional Approach to Counseling Children and Adolescents With Health Conditions

Autor: Jennie Park-taylor , Merle Keitel

Número de Páginas: 244

The purpose of the present book, An Intersectional Approach to Counseling Children and Adolescents with Health Conditions, is to provide mental health professionals and students of counseling, medicine, psychology, social work, and other helping professions, with useful information and helpful suggestions for their work with children and adolescents who experience significant health issues. The chapter authors rely on an intersectional understanding of the human experience and specifically focus on how diverse youth experience, understand, and seek support for specific health conditions and illnesses. Considering contemporary research that has shed light on some of the ways individuals’ multiple social identities interconnect and interact to compound experiences of illness, health psychology researchers would benefit from applying an intersectional lens in their explorations of the micro and macro-level variables that influence pathways towards health and illness for different groups. For mental health practitioners, an intersectional perspective on diverse children and adolescents’ experiences of specific health conditions will more likely lead to innovative and inclusive...

Bloody Italy

Bloody Italy

Autor: Patricia Prandini Buckler

Número de Páginas: 207

These new essays comprise a critical analysis of present-day crime fiction and nonfiction works set in Italy (all of which are available in English). The writers discussed range from Donna Leon and Michael Dibdin to Leonardo Sciascia and Andrea Camilleri. Essays also deal with nonfiction by Roberto Saviano and Douglas Preston. An emerging theme is the corruption of Italian police and judiciary officials and the frustration of officers and politicians trying to work ethically within a flawed system. Many of the works discussed show the struggle of the honest characters to find at least a limited justice for the victims.

Dynasty and Diplomacy in the Court of Savoy

Dynasty and Diplomacy in the Court of Savoy

Autor: Toby Osborne

Número de Páginas: 326

This book is a major study in English of the duchy of Savoy during the period of the Thirty Years War. Rather than examining Savoy purely in terms of its military or geo-strategic role, Dynasty and Diplomacy in the Court of Savoy comprises three interwoven strands: the dynastic ambitions of the ruling House of Savoy, the family interests of an elite clan in ducal service, and the unique role played by one member of that clan, Abate Alessandro Scaglia (1592-1641), who emerged as one of Europe's most widely known diplomats. Scaglia, the focus of the book, affords insights not only into Savoyard court politics and diplomacy, but more generally into a diplomatic culture of seventeenth-century Europe. With his image fixed by a remarkable series of Van Dyck portraits, Scaglia is emblematic of an international network of princes, diplomats, courtiers and artists, at the point of contact between dynasticism, high politics and the arts.

L'histoire secrète

L'histoire secrète

Autor: Jean-raymond Tournoux

The Perpendiculum: Presumptions and Legal Arguments in the 12th Century

The Perpendiculum: Presumptions and Legal Arguments in the 12th Century

Autor: David De Concilio

Número de Páginas: 478

The Perpendiculum (or Summula de presumptionibus), produced in Northern France c.1170, is one of the earliest collections of brocards: a literary genre intended to provide legal arguments for disputation in the medieval schools of law. Its innovative use of dialectical techniques and its theorization of canon law presumptions have attracted the attention of legal historians, raising questions on its origin and milieu. This book offers the first comprehensive study of this work, with a Latin edition and an English translation of its text, shedding new light on the significance of this collection for twelfth-century legal teaching and learning.

Last Comes the Raven

Last Comes the Raven

Autor: Italo Calvino

Número de Páginas: 221

These early short stories brim with the beauty of the Italian countryside and seaside, telling tales both sumptuous and unnerving. Calvino's war-torn Italy is vivid, intense, almost hyper-real. A trio of greedy burglars rob a pastry shop, a boy offers a girl presents of toads and insects from the garden, a wealthy family invites a rustic goatherd to lunch, only to mock him. In every story he reveals the hidden meaning beneath the surface of everyday life, and the ludicrousness of war. Some stories from Last Comes the Raven have been previously available in the collection Adam, One Afternoon. This new expanded collection includes several stories newly translated by Ann Goldstein and is an important addition to Calvino's legacy. 'In Last Comes the Raven, a collection of early stories, we find the man behind the magician' New Yorker

Adding Insult to Injury

Adding Insult to Injury

Autor: Bottolini

From his kindergarten days to his high school years, from the university ones to his successes in the workplace, there was one thing that had never changed in Emanuele’s life: the fact that in one way or another things always went better for Simone than for him. Above all, what Emanuele couldn’t put behind him was the teasing and harassment that Simone continued to make him suffer, building a good part of his success on that very harassment. This explicit short story is included in the Dirty Tales – Volume III collection.

All Our Yesterdays

All Our Yesterdays

Autor: Natalia Ginzburg

Número de Páginas: 332

From “one of the most distinguished writers of modern Italy” (New York Review of Books), a classic novel of society in the midst of a war. This powerful novel is set against the background of Italy from 1939 to 1944, from the anxious months before the country entered the war, through the war years, to the allied victory with its trailing wake of anxiety, disappointment, and grief. In the foreground are the members of two families. One is rich, the other is not. In All Our Yesterdays, as in all of Ms. Ginzburg’s novels, terrible things happen—suicide, murder, air raids, and bombings. But seemingly less overwhelming events, like a family quarrel, adultery, or a deception, are given equal space, as if to say that, to a victim, adultery and air raids can be equally maiming. All Our Yesterdays gives a sharp portrait of a society hungry for change, but betrayed by war. During the period described in the novel, Natalia Ginzburg was married to the writer Leone Ginzburg. Because of his underground activities, he was interned under Mussolini’s reign, along with his family, in a restricted area in the Abruzzi. When the Ginzburgs later moved to Rome, Leone was arrested and tortured...
