The Miracle of Dunkirk

The Miracle of Dunkirk

Autor: Walter Lord

Número de Páginas: 479

The true story of the World War II evacuation portrayed in the Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk, by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Day of Infamy. In May 1940, the remnants of the French and British armies, broken by Hitler’s blitzkrieg, retreated to Dunkirk. Hemmed in by overwhelming Nazi strength, the 338,000 men gathered on the beach were all that stood between Hitler and Western Europe. Crush them, and the path to Paris and London was clear. Unable to retreat any farther, the Allied soldiers set up defense positions and prayed for deliverance. Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered an evacuation on May 26, expecting to save no more than a handful of his men. But Britain would not let its soldiers down. Hundreds of fishing boats, pleasure yachts, and commercial vessels streamed into the Channel to back up the Royal Navy, and in a week nearly the entire army was ferried safely back to England. Based on interviews with hundreds of survivors and told by “a master narrator,” The Miracle of Dunkirk is a striking history of a week when the outcome of World War II hung in the balance (Arthur Schlesinger Jr.).

World War II on Film

World War II on Film

Autor: David Luhrssen

Número de Páginas: 219

World War II on Film examines the war through the lens of 12 films. The movies selected include productions made during World War II and in each succeeding decade, providing a sense of how different generations perceive the war. World War II on Film provides a succinct yet well-grounded appraisal of that war as seen through 12 representative films. The book separates fact from fiction, showing where the movies were accurate and where they departed from reality, and places them in the larger context of historical and social events. Each movie chosen represents a particular aspect of the conflict, including the air war over Europe, the condition of prisoners of war, Nazi atrocities, and the British evacuation at Dunkirk. Unlike most histories of Hollywood during World War II or the genre of war movies, World War II on Film examines in depth the relation between the depictions of events, beliefs, attitudes, and ways of life as seen on film with reality as documented by historians or recorded by journalists or eyewitnesses to the war. The volume will appeal to high school and college readers, as well as general interest readers and film buffs.

French Warships in the Age of Sail, 1786–1861

French Warships in the Age of Sail, 1786–1861

Autor: Rif Winfield , Stephen S Roberts

Número de Páginas: 1116

This comprehensive reference presents in-depth information on French Naval ships of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. By 1786, after besting the Royal Navy in its many conflicts across the Atlantic, the French Navy had earned a sterling reputation for its ship design and fighting skills. Yet within a few years, the French Revolution had devastated its efficiency, leading to one defeat after another. This lull persisted until 1815, when the French Navy's technical innovations produced some of the most advanced ships of the age. This book is the first comprehensive listing of these ships in English. It is organized by Rate, classification and class, with significant technical and building data, followed by a concise summary of the careers of each ship in every class. Illustrated and authoritative, it presents a clear picture of the overall development of French warships in the latter half of the sailing era.

The Bunker Chronicles: Withdrawing to Victory

The Bunker Chronicles: Withdrawing to Victory

Autor: Pasquale De Marco

Número de Páginas: 158

In the annals of World War II, the name Dunkirk stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, a symbol of the indomitable spirit of a nation facing its darkest hour. However, behind the veil of this iconic narrative lies a complex tapestry of propaganda, myth-making, and political maneuvering that has obscured the true nature of this pivotal event. This book delves into the depths of the Dunkirk myth, meticulously dissecting the layers of fiction and propaganda that have been woven around this historic battle. It unveils the calculated efforts of the British government to manipulate information, control the narrative, and craft a heroic tale that served its strategic and political agenda. Beyond the carefully orchestrated propaganda, the book shines a light on the experiences of the ordinary men who fought and survived Dunkirk. Their untold stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience paint a vivid picture of the human toll of war, often overshadowed by the mythologized narrative. Furthermore, the book explores the profound impact of the Dunkirk myth on the course of World War II and beyond. It examines how this carefully crafted narrative was used to rally public support, secure...

The 72nd New York Infantry in the Civil War

The 72nd New York Infantry in the Civil War

Autor: Rick Barram

Número de Páginas: 317

This is the story of the men who fought and died in the 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Part of Dan Sickles' famed Excelsior Brigade, the 72nd New York served in all the major actions associated with the III Corps, losing one-fourth or more of the regiment in three different engagements. The narrative of the war is told in the words of the men who were there. Drawing on soldier's letters, diaries, memoirs (many unpublished or obscure) and official reports, this work follows these men from the exciting beginnings of recruitment, the boredom and frustrations of life policing the secessionist countryside of Southern Maryland, through to the eventual disbanding of the regiment in July of 1864 after being bled white at Williamsburg, the Peninsula, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Overland Campaign. A final chapter offers a brief account of many of the men's lives following the war. Included in the work are photographs, period illustrations, maps and an organizational chart. A complete roster is arranged by company with chronologies of officers' service.

The Initiation, Propagation, and Arrest of Joints and Other Fractures

The Initiation, Propagation, and Arrest of Joints and Other Fractures

Autor: John W. Cosgrove , Terry Engelder

Número de Páginas: 340

This volume is a state of the art look at our understanding of joint development in the crust. Answers are provided for such questions as the mechanisms by which joints are initiated, the factors controlling the path they follow during the propagation process, and the processes responsible for the arrest of joints. Many of the answers to these questions can be inferred from the geometry of joint surface morphology and joint patterns. Joints are a record of the orientation of stress at the time of propagation and as such they are also useful records of ancient stress fields, regional and local. Because outcrop and subsurface views of joints are limited, statistical techniques are required to characterize joints and joint sets. Finally, joints are subject to post-propagation stresses that further localize deformation and are the focus for the development of new structures.

The Battle Of France

The Battle Of France

Autor: Peter Cornwell

Número de Páginas: 596

Peter Cornwell tells the story of the greatest air battle of the Second World War when six nations were locked in combat over north-western Europe for a traumatic six weeks in 1940. He describes the day-to-day events as the battle unfolds, and details the losses suffered by all six nations involved: Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and, rather belatedly, Italy. As far as RAF fighter squadrons in France were concerned, it was an all-Hurricane show, yet it was the Blenheim and Battle crews who suffered the brunt of the casualties. Every aircraft lost or damaged through enemy action while operating in France is listed together with the fate of the crews. The RAF lost more than a thousand aircraft of all types over the Western Front during the six-week battle, the French Air Force 1,400, but Luftwaffe losses were even higher at over 1,800 aircraft.

Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan

Autor: Darren Mooney

Número de Páginas: 219

Christopher Nolan is one of the defining directors of the 21st century. Few of his contemporaries can compete in terms of critical and commercial success, let alone cultural impact. His films have a rare ability to transcend audience expectations, appealing to both casual moviegoers and dyed-in-the-wool cineastes. Nolan's work ranges from gritty crime thrillers (Memento, Insomnia) to spectacular blockbusters (the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception). They have taken audiences from the depths of space (Interstellar) to the harsh realities of war (Dunkirk). And they have pushed the boundaries of the possible in modern movie making. This critical history covers his complete filmography, tracing his career from film student to indie darling to Oscar-nominated auteur.
