Mi jefe

Autor: Whitney G.

Número de Páginas: 400

La carrera de Claire Gracen como directora de marketing no podía ser más meteórica, y, además, estaba felizmente casada con el hombre del que había estado enamorada desde la adolescencia; su vida era perfecta... Espera... ¡No!

Autor: Carlos Perozzo

Número de Páginas: 405

This enchanting novel transcends reality and flirts with fantasy as it tells two converging stories: one at the popular Royal Magic Circus and the other at El Cisne restaurant in Bogota. One narrative is dominated by the brightly-lit drama of love between a clown and a trapeze acrobat, and the other, by the melancholy atmosphere of Bogota's bohemian life. The characters' intricate stories are woven together by illusion, dreams, and love.

Rosario Tijeras

Rosario Tijeras

Autor: Jorge Franco

Número de Páginas: 176

"Since they shot her at point-blank range while she was being kissed, she confused the pain of love with that of death." Rosario Tijeras is the violent, violated character at the center of Jorge Franco's study of contrasts, set in self-destructing 1980s Medellín. Her very name-evoking the rosary, and scissors-bespeaks her conflict as a woman who becomes a contract killer to insulate herself from the random violence of the streets. Then she is shot, gravely wounded, and the circle of contradiction is closed. From the corridors of the hospital where Rosario is fighting for her life, Antonio, the narrator, waits to learn if she will recover. Through him, we reconstruct the friendship between the two, her love story with Emilio, and her life as a hitwoman. Rosario Tijeras has been recognized as an admirable continuation of a literary subject that was first treated by Gabriel García Márquez and then by Fernando Vallejo. A work in the Latin American social realist tradition, Rosario Tijeras is told in fast and vibrant prose and with poetic flourish.

Aquí Estamos-- --ya Nos Vamos

Aquí Estamos-- --ya Nos Vamos

Autor: Francisco J. Bustos , Michael Cheno Wickert

Número de Páginas: 100

Francisco Bustos eloquently writes of Colonia Ruiz Cortinez and Barrio San Ysidro, waiting in la linea to be scrutinized by U.S. Customs officials, and of the bi-national journey of living both in the United States and Mxico. His melodic tone defies the fast-paced world of schedules, while being actively engaged in the moment, and then fleeting down another street to encounter another tale. As es la vida qu no?, Bustos says, As es. Michael Cheno Wickert focuses mainly on living in the barrios of Southeast San Diego where life often turns toward violence and suspicion is commonplace. It is a place where identities are shattered and reconfigured from the broken pieces into a kaleidoscope. It is a land of churches, liquor stores, and taco shops. It is where paint, blood, sweat, and salsa drip from the body and splat on weather-worn sidewalks to tell the stories of an America often ignored.

Poeta en San Francisco

Poeta en San Francisco

Autor: Barbara Jane Reyes

Número de Páginas: 120

Poetry. Asian American Studies. POETA EN SAN FRANCISCO is the winner of the highly prestigious James Laughlin Award for 2005, awarded annually from the Academy of American Poetry and the only prize for a second book of poetry in the United States. Although Reyes' first book was not as widely known as the first book of many of the other eligible poets, the judges nevertheless courageously chose this risky, radical, and deserving second book put out by an energetic but very small publisher. Reyes received her undergraduate education at UC Berkeley, where she also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Filipino American literary publication Maganda. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her first book, Gravities of Center, was published by Arkipelago Books (SF) in 2003.

Mariana Pineda

Mariana Pineda

Autor: Federico García Lorca

Número de Páginas: 175

Mariana Pineda (1925) was Lorca's first success in the theatre. Based on a popular Andalusian ballad, it tells the story of Mariana Pineda who was garrotted in 1831 under the reactionary regime of Ferdinand VII for embroidering a Liberal flag and refusing to betray her lover. Written during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the political message would not have escaped Lorca's audience. But the play is primarily the work of a poet and its appeal lies in the delicate tension that results from a deft blend of lyricism and drama which culminates in an astonishing level of spirituality in the final scenes when Mariana awaits her execution in a prison-convent. The characteristic themes of Lorca's tragedies - love, frustration, fate, freedom, death and womanhood - flourish within the play's appropriate and exquisite romantic mood. Spanish text with facing-page translation, introduction and commentary.

Celestina

Celestina

Autor: Charlotte Smith

Número de Páginas: 603

Published here for the first time in a modern edition, Charlotte Smith’s third novel is both rivetingly plotted and unique for its time in its powerful depiction of a gifted Romantic woman poet. The novel’s heroine, Celestina, abandoned as a child in a French convent, becomes an independent, witty, and accomplished elegiac poet who, in a reversal of the usual pattern of the courtship novel, acts as a mentor to several men in her life. Written at the beginning of the French Revolution, Smith’s novel depicts characters challenging both corrupt authority and conventional morality, exemplifying her hope that English society was on the verge of a great change for the better. This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction and primary source material relating to the novel’s reception, its political contexts (writings by Reverend Richard Price, Edmund Burke, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Thomas Paine), and the author’s life.

London Fields

London Fields

Autor: Martin Amis

Número de Páginas: 470

"There is a murderer, there is a murderee, and there is a foil. Everyone is always out there searching for someone and something, usually for a lover, usually for love. And this is a love story. But the murderee - Nicola Six - is searching for something and someone else: her murderer. She knows the time, she knows the place, she knows the motive, she knows the means. She just doesn't know the man. London Fields is a brilliant, funny and multi-layered novel. It is a book in which the narrator, Samson Young, enters the Black Cross, a thoroughly undesirable public house, and finds the main players of his drama assembled, just waiting to begin. It's a gift of a story from real life-all Samson has to do is write it as it happens."--Publisher's website.

La tradición manuscrita de los Sueños de Quevedo y la primera edición

La tradición manuscrita de los Sueños de Quevedo y la primera edición

Autor: James O. Crosby

Número de Páginas: 132

Annotation Between 1605 and 1621, Quevedo wrote a sequence of five "Dreams" or "Visions" "(Suenos y discursos), in each of which he hilariously envisions Spanish society as populated by people rightfully condemned to Hell. These astonishingly witty and irreverent satires of contemporary Spanish culture, morality, prejudice and religious fanaticism, were composed in a style as allusive, elliptical and equivocal as to successfully entertain both those who barely understood their full range and import, and others who celebrated the poet's rebellious insinuations. Censorship prohibited the publication of such satire in its original form, but hundreds of copies were made by hand and circulated widely. In 1993 a critical edition of all of the surviving manuscripts was published. Crosby's work compares this version with all of the 43 extant manuscripts, and for the first time identifies those groups of manuscripts from which the publishers of the first edition derived their text. This text can now be seen as a version not only censored, but corrupted successively by copyists and editors who did not understand Quevedo's satire. The result is hardly what Spain's most famous satirist...
