James Burney (1750-1821) fue oficial de la Marina Británica y escritor. A la muy temprana edad de diez años fue enviado a trabajar como sirviente personal de un capitán del navío "Princess Amelia". En 1772 acompañó al capitán Cook en su segundo viaje de descubrimiento de los mares del sur. A su regreso a Inglaterra, en 1774, sirvió de intérprete a "Omai", el primer tahitiano que visitó la Gran Bretaña.
