I finished sixth grade until I had 15 years old, but I remember that since I was young I liked to write stories, although I had never had the opportunity to publish them. I hope these stories reach your hearts and I also hope they like you. I want you enjoy them so much that you want to read them all... and other stories more. Remember that reading gives you education and culture. A part of these stories is true. A common occurrence for some people, whether by nature or custom, is to criticize or judge others and, often we do not realize that we make that person, or their family feel bad. We the Dreamers

Autor: Josefina Vázquez Mota

DREAMer: a young visionary, an undocumented immigrant, who wants to achieve the American Dream. As of August 2016 it was estimated that some 35 million Mexicans were living in the United States, 23.5 million of whom were born in the United States and 11.5 million in Mexico. Of the latter, only 5 million are undocumented and of them, 1.3 million are considered DREAMers: young people who were taken to the United States by their parents when they were children, who grew up and were educated in this country, and who -because of their illegal status- face daunting obstacles to develop professionally. This, however, does not prevent them from dreaming. In We the DREAMers, Josefina Vázquez Mota explores the laws and statistics, and above all highlights the narratives and emotions behind the life stories of these DREAMers whose only objectiveis to fulfill their dreams. Their testimonies offer a kaleidoscope of viewpoints, pinpointing many obstacles. Nevertheless, they are voices of young people who have not given up; instead they have created or joined activist groups alongside many other people who, like them, just want to be heard and acknowledged. This volume introduces you to some of ...

Lila´s sorrows

Autor: José Prats Sariol

Número de Páginas: 332

Lila is a simply unforgettable adventure. The past is evoked with affection and authentic compassion, at times infused with a little bit of humor […] It is not easy, and much less common, to find a text that is so balanced yet moving at the same time. The story has a profound impact without indulging in melodrama. In her letters, the main character holds on to her memories like a shipwreck survivor clings to hope. Prats Sariol has given us an epistolary novel and a crime novel all in one. The murder mystery is not solved until the very end; it is only in the last line that we find out how Lila and her good friend and accomplice in life, Virginia, died. This is something that only the best novels achieve without resorting to false trickery. The present is taken one day at a time, without asking for too much: being grateful is a virtue. The future, on the other hand, is revealed in conjunction with each reunion, especially the one with the beloved Valerio, late at night, somewhere in Europe. But I will say no more; read for yourself and enjoy. In Lila’s words: “I’ve just registered my exile. Tomorrow, in some corner, another foreigner will wave his handkerchief.” Eliseo...

Sex and Sexuality in Latin America

Autor: Daniel Balderston , Donna J. Guy

Número de Páginas: 288

"Social Capital is an important crtique that should stimulate further analysis and dicussion of what constitutes community." -- New Political Science "The reader emerges with a good sense of the gaps in Putnam's work- or more appropriately in the context of this book, the way in which the 'feelgood' factor of Putnam's work deserves critical analysis." --Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations This collection tackles the theme of isolation and the breakdown of mediating social institutions. It is, in part, a response to Robert Putnam's Bowling Alone as well as an attempt to create a broader idea of civil society. These original essays contribute to the examination of democratic theory and practice, exploring one of the most popular causes of this decline in public trust--social capital. These critical essays are written by specialists and scholars in American politics and American political thought. They utilize diverse methodologies--empirical and philosophical--and multiple perspectives to examine critically the social capital discourse and how it is related to political participation, civic engagement, and American democracy.

Mexican Folk Narrative from the Los Angeles Area

Autor: Elaine K. Miller

Número de Páginas: 414

Urban Los Angeles is the setting in which Elaine Miller has collected her narratives from Mexican-Americans. The Mexican folk tradition, varied and richly expressive of the inner life not only of a people but also of the individual as each lives it and personalizes it, is abundantly present in the United States. Since it is in the urban centers that most Mexican-Americans have lived, this collection represents an important contribution to the study of that tradition and to the study of the changes urban life effects on traditional folklore. The collection includes sixty-two legendary narratives and twenty traditional tales. The legendary narratives deal with the virgins and saints as well as with such familiar characters as the vanishing hitchhiker, the headless horseman, and the llorona. Familiar characters appear in the traditional tales—Juan del Oso, Blancaflor, Pedro de Ordimalas, and others. Elaine Miller concludes that the traditional tales are dying out in the city because tale telling itself is not suited to the fast pace of modern urban life, and the situations and characters in the tales are not perceived by the people to be meaningfully related to the everyday...

The city of Mucenka is a shadow. Maria and Thomas flee to the interior of the forest, where they will create a beautiful family. One of his sons, Oscar, oblivious to everything on the other side of the splendid and leafy forest that circumscribes the lands of his parents, unawared of his past, will take a decisive step that will change the course of everything he longed in his life. Everything that his parents did not tell him, with the healthy intention of protecting him, was revealed against the family in an Oscar's slip. From that tragic moment, the young man had to fight for much more than survival. He struggled to breathe and to be able to think freely. Many efforts were useless and vain, but there was one that, always, was worth it, until the end: To learn.
