Death of an Altar Boy

Autor: E.j. Fleming

Número de Páginas: 297

The tragic death of 13-year-old Danny Croteau in 1972 faded from headlines and memories for 20 years until the Boston abuse scandal--a string of assaults within the Catholic Church--exploded in the early 2000s. Despite numerous indications--including 40 claims of sexual misconduct with minors--pointing to him as Croteau's killer, the Reverend Richard R. Lavigne remains "innocent." Drawing on more than 10,000 pages of police and court records and interviews with Danny's friends and family, fellow abuse victims, and church officials, the author uncovers the truth--church complicity in a cover up and the masking of priests' involvement in a ring of abusive clergy--behind Croteau's death and those who had a hand in it.

(Henri Sensine)

Remembering Viet Nam

Autor: Regula Fuchs

Número de Páginas: 266

How does American culture deal with its memories of the Vietnam War and what role does literature play in this process? Remembering Viet Nam is a fascinating exploration of the ways in which authors of Vietnam War literature represent American cultural memory in their writings. The analysis is based on a wide array of sources including historical, political, cultural and literary studies as well as works on trauma. It begins with an examination of American foundation myths - their normative, formative and, most of all, their bonding nature - and the role institutions such as the military and the media play in upholding these myths. The study then considers the soldiers' and war veterans' minds and bodies and the stories they tell as key sites in the debates over the war's place in American cultural memory. The multilayered approach of Remembering Viet Nam allows the investigation of Vietnam War literature in its whole breadth including the debates instigated by the works examined and the influence these narratives themselves have on American cultural memory. Most importantly, the analysis uncovers why American foundation myths - despite their being thoroughly questioned and even...

The Anatomy of Baseball Nicknames

Autor: Ken Melley

Número de Páginas: 162

The Anatomy of Baseball Nicknames is filled with a selection of over seven hundred monikers given athletes, mostly in the game of baseball, that will make for an enjoyable read whether you are a fan of "America's Game" or not. Be it "the Left Arm of God" or "the Octopus" or "the Gooney Bird," all of these have been tagged to significant ballplayers in their major league careers. Besides the major leagues, which date back to the late 1800s, there is a wonderful parallel history of Negro Baseball teams, owners, and players and the powerful way in which nicknames were integral to the game. The integration of Major League Baseball, which began in 1947, when Jackie Robinson stepped on the field with the Brooklyn Dodgers, did not end the nickname era. There is also a revealing chapter on girls and women baseball players. The first game between two women's teams, where the players were paid for their play, dates back to the 1870s. Along with all the nicknames cited, there are over two hundred pictures of players categorized by their nicknames. The reader will recognize and identify with many of these nicknames, but one will find that far too many have been lost to the history of the game.

Transnational Borderlands in Women’s Global Networks

Autor: M. Sierra , C. Román-odio

Número de Páginas: 374

Transnational Borderlands: The Making of Cultural Resistance in Women's Global Networks investigates the implications of transnational feminist methodologies at multiple levels: collective actions, theory, pedagogy, discursive, and visual productions. It addresses a substantial gap in the field of transnational feminisms; namely, the absence of a voice that links social and theoretical outcomes to the politics of representation in literature, visual art, discourses of rights and citizenships, and pedagogy. The book encompasses three categories of relevance to contemporary transnational methodologies: the politics of cultural representation in literature and visual art, the de-centering of human/women's rights, and pedagogies of crossing and dissent. Given current interest in the cultures of globalization and the role women and other minorities play in them, we expect this book will appeal to scholars in the fields of Women's and Gender Studies, Borderlands Studies, Transnational Studies, and to anyone interested in how transnational processes shape a culture of resistance in women's global networks.

Conspiracy Theories in the United States and the Middle East

Autor: Michael Butter , Maurus Reinkowski

Número de Páginas: 388

Conspiracy Theories in the United States and the Middle East is the first book to approach conspiracy theorizing from a decidedly comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. Whereas previous studies have engaged with conspiracy theories within national frameworks only, this collection of essays draws attention to the fact that conspiracist visions are transnational narratives that travel between and connect different cultures. It focuses on the United States and the Middle East because these two regions of the world are entangled in manifold ways and conspiracy theories are currently extremely prominent in both. The contributors to the volume are scholars of Middle Eastern Studies, Anthropology, History, Political Science, Cultural Studies, and American Studies, who approach the subject from a variety of different theories and methodologies. However, all of them share the fundamental assumption that conspiracy theories must not be dismissed out of hand or ridiculed. Usually wrong and frequently dangerous, they are nevertheless articulations of and distorted responses to needs and anxieties that must be taken seriously. Focusing on individual case studies and displaying a high...

Empire of Conspiracy

Autor: Timothy Melley

Número de Páginas: 258

Why, Timothy Melley asks, have paranoia and conspiracy theory become such prominent features of postwar American culture? In Empire of Conspiracy, Melley explores the recent growth of anxieties about thought-control, assassination, political indoctrination, stalking, surveillance, and corporate and government plots. At the heart of these developments, he believes, lies a widespread sense of crisis in the way Americans think about human autonomy and individuality. Nothing reveals this crisis more than the remarkably consistent form of expression that Melley calls "agency panic"—an intense fear that individuals can be shaped or controlled by powerful external forces. Drawing on a broad range of forms that manifest this fear—including fiction, film, television, sociology, political writing, self-help literature, and cultural theory—Melley provides a new understanding of the relation between postwar American literature, popular culture, and cultural theory. Empire of Conspiracy offers insightful new readings of texts ranging from Joseph Heller's Catch-22 to the Unabomber Manifesto, from Vance Packard's Hidden Persuaders to recent addiction discourse, and from the "stalker"...

American Hybrid Poetics

Autor: Amy Moorman Robbins

Número de Páginas: 188

American Hybrid Poetics explores the ways in which hybrid poetics—a playful mixing of disparate formal and aesthetic strategies—have been the driving force in the work of a historically and culturally diverse group of women poets who are part of a robust tradition in contesting the dominant cultural order. Amy Moorman Robbins examines the ways in which five poets—Gertrude Stein, Laura Mullen, Alice Notley, Harryette Mullen, and Claudia Rankine—use hybridity as an implicitly political strategy to interrupt mainstream American language, literary genres, and visual culture, and expose the ways in which mass culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has had a powerfully standardizing impact on the collective American imagination. By forcing encounters between incompatible traditions—consumer culture with the avant-garde, low culture forms with experimental poetics, prose poetry with linguistic subversiveness—these poets bring together radically competing ideologies and highlight their implications for lived experience. Robbins argues that it is precisely because these poets have mixed forms that their work has gone largely unnoticed by leading members and critics ...

Threat Communication and the US Order after 9/11

Autor: Vanessa Ossa , David Scheu , Lukas R.a. Wilde

Número de Páginas: 205

This volume investigates the perception of threat, with particular regard to the roles, functions, and agencies of various types of media. With a focus on the profound impact of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 on the US-American political, social, and cultural order, the chapters reach from the early days after the attacks up to the 2016 election of Donald J. Trump. An international team of contributors analyze how the perceived threats and their subsequent representations changed during this period and what part different forms of media - media institutions, media technologies, and media formats - played within these transformations. Media theoretical perspectives are thus combined with historical approaches to examine the "re-ordering" of the nation, the state, and society proposed in an increasingly converging, multimodal, and networked media environment. This book’s focus on the interrelation between Media Studies, Cultural Studies, and American Studies makes it an indispensable landmark for fields such as Historical Research, Media Theory, Narratology, and Popular Culture Studies.

Statesman

Autor: Douglas Rooks

Número de Páginas: 591

Over the course of his long and storied career, George Mitchell proved to be much more than just that senator from Maine. He is one of the last from a sort of "golden age" of American politics, when opposing parties worked together to accomplish things for the good of the nation, rather than the good of the party. Before becoming senator, Mitchell was an attorney and then a judge in Maine. Among his many public efforts, he is perhaps known for his environmental work and his work on peace and justice, especially his brokering of the peace in Ireland and his efforts in the Middle East. Now, seasoned journalist Douglas Rooks gives us a thoughtful and highly readable look at the man and his public work. While the book traces his personal life, it is primarily a political biography, exploring his time in office as well as his public work before and after his elected terms.Compiled from extensive interviews with Mitchell as well as staffers and others who've known and worked with him, it is as much an exploration of American politics at a time when politics could actually be said to have "worked," as it is a man whose vision and ideals have helped shape the world.

Theory Conspiracy

Autor: Frida Beckman , Jeffrey R. Di Leo

Número de Páginas: 242

Theory Conspiracy provides a state-of-the-art collection that takes stage on the meeting and/or battlegrounds between conspiracy theory and theory-asconspiracy. By deliberately scrambling the syntax—conspiracy theory cum theory conspiracy—it seeks to open a set of reflections on the articulation between theory and conspiracy that addresses how conspiracy might rattle the sense of theory as such. In this sense, the volume also inevitably stumbles on the recent debates on postcritique. The suspicion that our ways of reading in the humanities have been far too suspicious, if not paranoid, has gained considerable attention in a humanities continuously questioned as superfluous at best and leftist and dangerous at worst. The chapters in this volume all approach this problematic from different angles. It features clear engaging writing by a set of contributors who have published extensively on questions of paranoia, conspiracy theory, and/or the state of theory today. This collection will appeal to readers interested in conspiracy theories, critical theory, and the future of humanities.

Plots: Literary Form and Conspiracy Culture

Autor: Ben Carver , Dana Craciun , Todor Hristov

Número de Páginas: 198

This edited collection contributes to the study of conspiracy culture by analysing the relationship of literary forms to the formation, reception, and transformation of conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are narratives, and their narrative form provides the structure within which their ‘readers’ situate themselves when interpreting the world and its history. At the same time, conspiracist interpretations of the world may then be transmediated into works of literature and import popular discourse into narrative structures. The suppression and disappearance of books themselves may generate conspiracy theories and become co-opted into political dissent. Additionally, literary criticism itself is shown to adopt conspiracist modes of interpretation. By examining conspiracy plots as literary plots, with narrative, rhetorical, and symbolic characteristics, this volume is the first systematic study of how conspiracy culture in American and European history is the consequence of its interactions with literature. This book will be of great interest to researchers of conspiracy theories, literature, and literary criticism.

Escape Into the Future

Autor: John Stroup , Glenn W. Shuck

Número de Páginas: 335

Escape into the Future analyzes the power of pessimism, showing links between present-day religious pessimism and the nihilism of popular culture. Stroup and Shuck rummage through an interesting and eclectic body of pop culture--from Fight Club to X-Files to the Left Behind series--pointing out the presence of pessimistic themes throughout. This volume identifies and illuminates the religious language used in these works to articulate America's need to escape from its present cultural path and, ultimately, provide hope that it might do so.

Addiction Literature's Past and Present

Autor: Mark Ronan

Número de Páginas: 323

Addiction Literature's Past and Present aims to realign consideration of addiction as a transhistorical and transcultural aspect of the human condition. This book illuminates the premodern roots of the linguistic and narrative materials of addiction discourse and argues for Addiction Literature to be considered as a distinct literary phenomenon, with a history stretching back to Antiquity. Addiction, as it is understood in this book, exists at the intersection between appetite, habit and impaired personal behavioural agency. This book begins by exploring the ways in which we articulate the experience (both lived and observed) of addiction today, uncovering a core set of conceptual components and discursive tropes which are commonly associated with modern understandings of the phenomenon. Having established a common set of tropes and features which distinguish modern Addiction Literature as a distinct literary mode, it then considers premodern texts through this lens, revealing similar patterns of conception and convention in a broad range of historical periods and literary genres from Aesop to Shakespeare.

Popular Modernisms

Autor: Bruce A. Barber

Número de Páginas: 327

Popular Modernisms examines a process that has occurred throughout the history of art; one that accelerated with the social effects of the industrial revolution, the development of capitalism and the inception of modern social relations. It argues that the shocks of modernist art encouraged the production of visual satires, parodies, ironies and pastiches; and that, in the company of other forms of text or performance-based criticism, these were the means by which those in marginal, or subordinate social positions could exercise their displeasure and opposition to the ruling ideas and dominant classes of the day. Expressing feelings ranging from mild discomfort to pure rage, this criticism enabled social subordinates to contest or resist the dominance of high culture over low; in terms eloquently described by Antonio Gramsci, as the hegemony of the dominant centre culture over its margins. The focus upon graphic satires (cartoons and comics) of modern art attempts to provide some practical explication of the symbolic contest of power as this process represents the struggle to achieve and maintain, cultural hegemony. A further aim in this book is to investigate the symbolic...

Conspiracy/Theory

Autor: Joseph Masco , Lisa Wedeen

Número de Páginas: 291

In an era of intensified information warfare, ranging from global disinformation campaigns to individual attention hacks, what are the compelling terms for political judgment? How are we to build the knowledge needed to recognize and address important forms of harm when critical information is either not to be trusted or kept hidden? Rather than approach conspiratorial narrative as an irrational response to an obviously decipherable reality, Conspiracy/Theory identifies important affinities between conspiracy theory and critical theory. It recognizes the motivation people have—in their capacities as experts, theorists, and ordinary citizens—to search for patterns in events, to uncover what is covert and attend to dimensions of life that might be hiding in plain sight. If it seems strange that so many find themselves living in incommensurable, disorienting realities, the multidisciplinary contributors to Conspiracy/Theory explore how and why that came to be. Across history and geography, contributors inquire into the affects and imaginaries of political mobilization, tracking counterrevolutionary projects while acknowledging collective futures that demand conspiratorial...

The Sleeper Agent in Post-9/11 Media

Autor: Vanessa Ossa

Número de Páginas: 328

This book examines the figure of the sleeper agent as part of post-9/11 political, journalistic and fictional discourse. There is a tendency to discuss the terroristic threat after 9/11 as either a faraway enemy to be hunted down by military force or, on the other hand, as a ubiquitous, intangible threat that required constant alertness at home. The missing link between these two is the sleeper agent – the foreign enemy hiding among US citizens. By analyzing popular television shows, several US comic books, and a broad variety of Hollywood films that depict sleeper agents direct or allegorically, this book explores how a shift in perspective—from terrorist to sleeper agent—brings new insights into our understanding of post-9/11 representations of terrorism. The book’s interdisciplinary focus between media studies, cultural studies, and American studies, suggests that it will find an audience in a variety of fields, including historical research, narratology, popular culture, as well as media and terrorism studies.
