Cross-regional scholarly dialogue inspired by the work of the pioneering Cuban scholar. Fernando Ortiz (1881–1969) coined the term “transculturation” in 1940. This was an early case of theory from the South: concepts developed from an explicitly peripheral epistemological vantage point and launched as a corrective to European and North American theoretical formulations. What Ortiz proposed was a contrapuntal vision of complexly entangled processes that we, today, would conceptualize as cultural emergence. Inspired by Ortiz, this volume engineers an unprecedented conversation between Mediterraneanists and Caribbeanists. It harnesses Ortiz’s mid-twentieth-century theoretical formulations to early twenty-first-century issues pertinent to both regions, including migration, territorial sovereignty, and cultural diversity. The contributors explore this perspective (arguably formed during Ortiz’s youth in late nineteenth-century Menorca) in a dialogue between scholars of the contemporary Caribbean and Mediterranean to enable novel analytics for both regions and to more broadly to probe the promises and limits of Ortiz’s contribution for contemporary anthropological research...
»Transatlantic Caribbean« widens the scope of research on the Caribbean by focusing on its transatlantic interrelations with North America, Latin America, Europe and Africa and by investigating long-term exchanges of people, practices and ideas. Based on innovative approaches and rich empirical research from anthropology, history and literary studies the contributions discuss border crossings, south-south relations and diasporas in the areas of popular culture, religion, historical memory as well as national and transnational social and political movements. These perspectives enrich the theoretical debates on transatlantic dialogues and the Black Atlantic and emphasize the Caribbean's central place in the world.
In Cuba, emergent circulations between Cuba and contemporary Yorùbáland, Nigeria are transforming the landscape of gender, belief, and state religious policy. This project examines this reencounter through the lens of the controversial Yorubization--or re-Yorubization--of the religions of Regla de Ocha, also known as Santeria, and Ifá. Through an ethnography of affective belonging and emancipatory desire in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and the provinces of Holguín, Ciego de Ávila, and Guantánamo, this work examines how "African Traditionalists" mobilize select aspects of the Yorùbá Traditional Religion (YTR) and Yorùbá language of Nigeria in order to circumvent Cuban prohibitions regarding gender and carve out novel spaces of religious autonomy and authority. Through a critical examination of the intersections of aurality and predications of Africanity in Nigerian-style Ifá-òrìşa, this work interrogates the ways in which women and men craft sound and listening in order to reshape gendered subjectivities and reconstitute the boundaries of òrìşa worship in Cuba. This book explores the politics of artistic creativity, examining how black artists in Africa and the diaspora create art as a procedure of self-making. Essays cross continents to uncover the efflorescence of black culture in national and global contexts and in literature, film, performance, music, and visual art. Contributors place the concerns of black artists and their works within national and transnational conversations on anti-black racism, xenophobia, ethnocentrism, migration, resettlement, resistance, and transnational feminisms. Does art by the subaltern fulfill the liberatory potential that critics have ascribed to it? What other possibilities does political art offer? Together, these essays sort through the aesthetics of daily life to build a thesis that reflects the desire of black artists and cultures to remake themselves and their world.

El eclecticismo con el que se ha interpretado «lo africano» en el Caribe, ha mantenido encubierta la riqueza mitológica y literaria de la que se nutren los grupos de descendencia africana, y que se evoca en la narrativa del siglo XX en Cuba. Aché presencia africana revela ese trasfondo lucumí que conservó el sesgo anecdótico de su origen. Escritores cubanos como Carpentier, Lezama Lima, Sarduy, Cabrera Infante, Benítez Rojo, Barnet, y aquéllos de una narrativa reconocida como afro-cubana, han utilizado a profundidad este legado al Caribe. Deidre Prescod was initiated into the Ifa Tradition and journeyed to Nigeria in order to secure authentic information and know how as to the performance of rituals that are mandatory for any Ifa Initiate. The book Letters from Nigeria - Reflections of an Ifa Initiate is the author's reflection of her experiences while researching the spiritual and cultural tradition during her four years living among the Yoruba people of Nigeria in West Africa. These texts are treating with wisdom all events and problems which occur in the daily life of the Yoruba.
