¡Yo también tengo esa foto! El álbum familiar de Bogotá

¡Yo también tengo esa foto! El álbum familiar de Bogotá

Autor: Bernal, Ximena , Cavelier, Catalina , Barón, Alfredo

Power Politics

Power Politics

Autor: Karen Brodkin

Número de Páginas: 257

In the late 1990s, when California's deregulation of the production and sale of electric power created massive energy shortages, a group of environmental justice activists blocked construction of a power plant in their working-class Mexican and Central American neighborhoods. Why did they choose this battle? And how did the largely high school student activists come to prevail in the face of statewide political opinion? Power Politics is a rich and readable study of a grassroots campaign where longtime labor and environmental allies found themselves on opposite sides of a conflict that pitted good jobs against good air. Karen Brodkin analyzes how those issues came to be opposed and in doing so unpacks the racial and class dynamics that shape Americans' grasp of labor and environmental issues. Power Politics' activists stood at the forefront of a movement that is building broad-based environmental coalitions and placing social justice at the heart of a new and robust vision.

Bringing Aztlan to Mexican Chicago

Bringing Aztlan to Mexican Chicago

Autor: Jose Gamaliel Gonzalez

Número de Páginas: 202

Bringing Aztlán to Mexican Chicago is the autobiography of Jóse Gamaliel González, an impassioned artist willing to risk all for the empowerment of his marginalized and oppressed community. Through recollections emerging in a series of interviews conducted over a period of six years by his friend Marc Zimmerman, González looks back on his life and his role in developing Mexican, Chicano, and Latino art as a fundamental dimension of the city he came to call home. Born near Monterey, Mexico, and raised in a steel mill town in northwest Indiana, González studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Notre Dame. Settling in Chicago, he founded two major art groups: El Movimiento Artístico Chicano (MARCH) in the 1970s and Mi Raza Arts Consortium (MIRA) in the 1980s. With numerous illustrations, this book portrays González's all-but-forgotten community advocacy, his commitments and conflicts, and his long struggle to bring quality arts programming to the city. By turns dramatic and humorous, his narrative also covers his bouts of illness, his relationships with other artists and arts promoters, and his place within city and barrio politics.

Public Folklore

Public Folklore

Autor: Robert Baron , Nick Spitzer

Número de Páginas: 399

A landmark volume exploring the public presentation and application of folk culture in collaboration with communities, Public Folklore is available again with a new introduction discussing recent trends and scholarship. Editors Robert Baron and Nick Spitzer provide theoretical framing to contributions from leaders of major American folklife programs and preeminent folklore scholars, including Roger D. Abrahams, Robert Cantwell, Gerald L. Davis, Archie Green, Bess Lomax Hawes, Richard Kurin, Daniel Sheehy, and Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett. Their essays present vivid accounts of public folklore practice in a wide range of settings—nineteenth-century world's fairs and minstrel shows, festivals, museums, international cultural exchange programs, concert stages, universities, and hospitals. Drawing from case studies, historical analyses, and their own experiences as advocates, field researchers, and presenters, the essayists recast the history of folklore in terms of public practice, while discussing standards for presentation to new audiences. They approach engagement with tradition bearers as requiring collaboration and dialogue. They critically examine who has the authority to...

The Lost City of the Monkey God

The Lost City of the Monkey God

Autor: Douglas Preston

Número de Páginas: 348

The #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, named one of the best books of the year by The Boston Globe and National Geographic: acclaimed journalist Douglas Preston takes readers on a true adventure deep into the Honduran rainforest in this riveting narrative about the discovery of a lost civilization -- culminating in a stunning medical mystery. Since the days of conquistador Hernán Cortés, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die. In 1940, swashbuckling journalist Theodore Morde returned from the rainforest with hundreds of artifacts and an electrifying story of having found the Lost City of the Monkey God-but then committed suicide without revealing its location. Three quarters of a century later, bestselling author Doug Preston joined a team of scientists on a groundbreaking new quest. In 2012 he climbed aboard a rickety, single-engine plane carrying the machine that would change...

The Max Planck Handbooks in European Public Law

The Max Planck Handbooks in European Public Law

Autor: Armin Von Bogdandy , Huber Peter M. , Christoph Grabenwarter

Número de Páginas: 956

The Max Planck Handbooks in European Public Law series describes and analyzes the public law of the European legal space, an area that encompasses not only the law of the European Union but also the European Convention on Human Rights and, importantly, the domestic public laws of European states. Recognizing that the ongoing vertical and horizontal processes of European integration render legal comparison the task of our time for both scholars and practitioners, the project aims to foster a better understanding of the specific European legal pluralism and, ultimately, to contribute to the legitimacy and efficiency of European public law. The first volume of the series began this endeavour with an appraisal of the evolution of the state and its administration, offering both cross-cutting contributions and specific country reports. The third volume (the second in chronological terms) continues this approach with an in-depth appraisal of constitutional adjudication in various and diverse European countries. Fourteen country reports and two cross-cutting contributions investigate the antecedents, foundations, organization, procedure, and specific approach to constitutional issues...

Creating Marketing Magic and Innovative Future Marketing Trends

Creating Marketing Magic and Innovative Future Marketing Trends

Autor: Maximilian Stieler

Número de Páginas: 1319

This volume includes the full proceedings from the 2016 Academy of Marketing Science (AMS) Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida, entitled Creating Marketing Magic and Innovative Future Marketing Trends. The marketing environment continues to be dynamic. As a result, researchers need to adapt to the ever-changing scene. Several macro-level factors continue to play influential roles in changing consumer lifestyles and business practices. Key factors among these include the increasing use of technology and automation, while juxtaposed by nostalgia and “back to the roots” marketing trends. At the same time, though, as marketing scholars, we are able to access emerging technology with greater ease, to undertake more rigorous research practices. The papers presented in this volume aim to address these issues by providing the most current research from various areas of marketing research, such as consumer behavior, marketing strategy, marketing theory, services marketing, advertising, branding, and many more. Founded in 1971, the Academy of Marketing Science is an international organization dedicated to promoting timely explorations of phenomena related to the science of...

Applications of the Unified Protocol in Health Conditions

Applications of the Unified Protocol in Health Conditions

Autor: Jorge Osma , Todd J. Farchione

Número de Páginas: 385

People diagnosed with different health conditions often experience emotional disorders or anxiety and depressive symptoms at some point. The Unified Protocol (UP) is a transdiagnostic treatment protocol that aims to improve emotion regulation difficulties contributing to emotional disorder symptoms (including comorbidity) and other affective components related to the physical disease. In Applications of the Unified Protocol in Health Conditions, the leading UP experts provide valuable insights to clinicians into how the UP--a single, scalable, cognitive behavioral therapy protocol--can be modified in relatively minor ways to address the emotional difficulties that often accompany these health conditions in different treatment settings. This book provides clinicians with a "how to" guide for using the UP to treat a range of commonly encountered mental health issues that are present in health conditions in adults. Each chapter focuses on a specific health condition and provides a rationale for using the UP in treatment, a description of how to apply core UP treatment modules, and guidance on making adaptions to the protocol. Application of the protocol is illustrated through case...

Maya In Exile

Maya In Exile

Autor: Allan Burns

Número de Páginas: 258

The Maya are the single largest group of indigenous people living in North and Central America. Beginning in the early 1980s, hundreds of thousands of Maya fled the terror of Guatemalan civil strife to safety in Mexico and the U.S. This ethnography of Mayan immigrants who settled in Indiatown, a small agricultural community in south central Florida, presents the experiences of these traditional people, their adaptations to life in the U.S., and the ways they preserve their ancestral culture. For more than a decade, Allan F. Burns has been researching and doing advocacy work for these immigrant Maya, who speak Kanjobal, Quiche, Mamanâ, and several other of the more than thirty distinct languages in southern Mexico and Guatemala. In this fist book on the Guatemalan Maya in the U.S, he uses their many voices to communicate the experience of the Maya in Florida and describes the advantages and results of applied anthropology in refugee studies and cultural adaptation. Burns describes the political and social background of the Guatemalan immigrants to the U.S. and includes personal accounts of individual strategies for leaving Guatemala and traveling to Florida. Examining how they...
