Paranoia

Paranoia

Autor: Daniel Freeman , Jason Freeman

Número de Páginas: 199

Are we living in a uniquely paranoid age? Catalysed by the threat of terrorism, fears about others have reached a new intensity. The roll call of apparent dangers seems to increase by the day: muggers, child abductors, drug dealers, hoodied teenagers. Crime has apparently reached such high levels that CCTV cameras are required in every town centre, and parents are so fearful that many children never go out alone. Until recently, no one suspected just how common paranoia was. But new research suggests that around a quarter of us have regular paranoid thoughts, and probably lots more have them occasionally. Paranoia is so prevalent that there 's a very good chance that all of us will, at some point in our lives, be among the 25%. Yet, although paranoia is as common as depression or anxiety, most of us know almost nothing about it. What is paranoia? What causes it? Are some people more prone to paranoia than others? Are we more paranoid now than we used to be? How should we deal with our paranoid thoughts? And how can we reduce the amount of paranoia in our society? Co-written by one of the world 's leading psychologists of paranoia, and drawing on the latest scientific research,...

Paranoia: A Study in Diagnosis

Paranoia: A Study in Diagnosis

Autor: A. Fried , J. Agassi

Número de Páginas: 243

There is a curious parallel between the philosophy of science and psychiatric theory. The so-called demarcation question, which has exercised philosophers of science over the last decades, posed the problem of distinguishing science proper from non-science - in par ticular, from metaphysics, from pseudo-science, from the non rational or irrational, or from the untestable or the empirically meaningless. In psychiatric theory, the demarcation question appears as a problem of distinguishing the sane from the insane, the well from the mentally ill. The parallelism is interesting when the criteria for what fails to be scientific are seen to be congruent with the criteria which define those psychoses which are marked by cognitive failure. In this book Dr Yehuda Fried and Professor Joseph Agassi - a practicing psychiatrist and a philosopher of science, respectivel- focus on an extreme case of psychosis - paranoia - as an essentially intellectual disorder: that is, as one in which there is a systematic and chronic delusion which is sustained by logical means. They write: "Paranoia is an extreme case by the very fact that paranoia is by definition a quirk of the intellectual apparatus, a...

Paranoia and Modernity

Paranoia and Modernity

Autor: John Farrell

Número de Páginas: 372

"Don Quixote is the first great modern paranoid adventurer.... Grandiosity and persecution define the characters of Swift's Gulliver, Stendhal's Julien Sorel, Melville's Ahab, Dostoyevsky's Underground Man, Ibsen's Masterbuilder Solness, Strindberg's Captain (in The Father), Kafka's K., and Joyce's autobiographical hero Stephen Dedalus.... The all-encompassing conspiracy, very much in its original Rousseauvian cast, has become almost the normal way of representing society and its institutions since World War Two, giving impetus to heroic plots and counter-plots in a hundred films and in the novels of Burroughs, Heller, Ellison, Pynchon, Kesey, Mailer, DeLillo, and others."--from Paranoia and Modernity Paranoia, suspicion, and control have preoccupied key Western intellectuals since the sixteenth century. Paranoia is a dominant concern in modern literature, and its peculiar constellation of symptoms--grandiosity, suspicion, unfounded hostility, delusions of persecution and conspiracy--are nearly obligatory psychological components of the modern hero. How did paranoia come to the center of modern moral and intellectual consciousness? In Paranoia and Modernity, John Farrell brings...

Sex, Paranoia, and Modern Masculinity

Sex, Paranoia, and Modern Masculinity

Autor: Kenneth Paradis

Número de Páginas: 240

Sex, Paranoia, and Modern Masculinity explores how twentieth-century conceptions of paranoia became associated with the excessive or unregulated exercise of masculine intellectual tendencies. Through an extended analysis of Freudian metapsychology, Kenneth Paradis illustrates how paranoid ideation has been especially connected to the figure of the male body under threat of genital mutilation or emasculation. In this context, he also considers how both midcentury detective fiction (especially the work of Raymond Chandler) and contemporaneous autobiographies of male-to-female transsexuals negotiate the terms of this gendered understanding of psychopathology, thus articulating their own notions of moral value, individual autonomy, and effective agency.

Making Sense of Paranoia

Making Sense of Paranoia

Autor: Peter Bullimore , Ian Warwick , Kenneth Mclaughlin

Número de Páginas: 266

Making Sense of Paranoia provides a refreshing and challenging contribution to debates over mental health. Mainstream psychiatric texts tend to foreground medical explanations for mental distress, with the direct experiences and personal narratives of the sufferers themselves then used as evidence to substantiate pre-existing concepts. This book takes a radically different approach. Here, the personal narratives of sufferers are prioritised and then the prevailing theoretical frameworks are examined to see if they fit with the sufferers’ lifeworld, rather than the other way round. Seen from this perspective, it is argued that we require alternative ways to conceptualise paranoia and new forms of intervention to alleviate the suffering of those who experience distressing beliefs. What the contributors to this book have in common is their direct experience of paranoia, either through lived experience, the provision of professional support, or through developing new theoretical explanations to help us understand both the influences on, and experience of, paranoia.

New Directions in Forensic Psychology: Applying Neuropsychology, Biomarkers and Technology in Assessment & Intervention

New Directions in Forensic Psychology: Applying Neuropsychology, Biomarkers and Technology in Assessment & Intervention

Autor: Joan E. Van Horn , Josanne Van Dongen , Yvonne H. A. Bouman , Märta Wallinius , Patrice Renaud

Número de Páginas: 223

New trends in research, assessment and treatment are currently visible in the forensic field in three relatively separate areas: the use of neuropsychology, biomarkers, and wearables and VR-technology in forensic mental health. These areas individually can make a valuable contribution to improving forensic assessments and treatment but combined they might even have a greater impact. For example, heart rate variability (a biomarker) can be visualized during Virtual Reality (VR) scenarios to increase patients’ insights into their physiological responses. With our topic 'New Directions in Forensic Psychology: Applying Neuropsychology, Biomarkers and Technology in Assessment and Intervention’ we hope to offer more insight into the state of scientific developments in the aforementioned areas as they relate to forensic psychology. As a result, we hope to be able to pinpoint lacking knowledge and offer suggestions for further research.

The United States of Paranoia

The United States of Paranoia

Autor: Jesse Walker

Número de Páginas: 333

“A superb analysis of American paranoia . . . a terrific, measured, objective study of one of American culture’s most loaded topics.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) Conspiracies have been woven through America’s social tapestry since the beginning of its history. The United States of Paranoia is a unique and fascinating look at how these commonly held beliefs—true or not—have helped shape the American cultural imagination. Using examples from colonial times to today, Jesse Walker makes the compelling argument that paranoia doesn’t just exist on the fringe of society, but is at the core of our national identity. Walker doesn’t focus on proving or disproving a particular theory. Synthesizing intensive archival research in a pulp fiction narrative, he explores the myths that haunt our nation, breaking them into five distinct categories: The Enemy Outside, The Enemy Within, The Enemy Above, The Enemy Below, and The Benevolent Conspiracy. From J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI to Watergate, the “Matrix” phenomenon to the Birthers, Walker reveals how national myths have influenced our lives, including our view of ourselves and our government. He also identifies and...

Abnormal Speech

Autor: E. J. Boome , H. M. S. Baines , D. G. Harries

Número de Páginas: 183

Originally published in 1939, it was only recently that serious study and attention had been given to disorders of speech and there was a growing demand for books dealing with the subject. Abnormal Speech deals concisely with the aetiology of the varied abnormalities of speech and discusses the treatment practised by experienced therapists at the time, successful in affecting permanent cures. It was now recognised that the causes and classification of speech disorders were fairly numerous, and that the essence of treatment consisted of discovering the nature and cause to apply the appropriate method of treatment. It was revised in 1950 in some part to account for the effects of the second world war on speech disorders. Today it can be read in its historical context. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1939. The language used and views portrayed are a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.
